Respiratory Issues

Looking for advice. My rodeo horse was diagnosed as a bleeder 3 years ago. Since his diagnosis he has not been running like himself. He has thick white snot come out of his nose off and on and has for 2 years now. Mainly after a trailer ride or a work out is when it appears most often. I have had him to a vet who specializes in lung issues twice now. First time I was told it was allergies. Put him on a round of Dex, ventipulmin and something else I canβt remember the name of. Was also told to pitch hay to him instead of feed him out of a bale feeder to decrease the dust and risk of allergies. I followed all directions and absolutely nothing changed. He started bleeding worse after runs and bleeding through lasix. Brought him back to the same vet and was told to just up the dosage of lasix before each run, which is not the answer I was looking for. I feel there is an underlying respiratory issue that is causing the thick white snot that appears off and on and is the main cause of the bleeding. Any ideas, suggestions, experiences that were similar? Planning on taking him to a different specialist for further diagnosis but am reaching out for any ideas. Thanks in advance.

Need a BAL if it hasn't been done already. Curost and Rebar Ranch Naturals are two places to start looking if you want to get your horse healthy again. Good luck, breathing issues are tough to deal with.

Soak his hay, get a new BAL done. If he gets super excited before he runs try an anxiolytic along with the lasix. Get with Joy from Rebar Ranch. It's possibly the missing link in your horses case.
Baseline BAL is a must!!! I really think you should get a nebulizer to treat him post run and pre run.
good luck let us see those #'s from the BAL and some of us can tell you what we've done with our like horses.

Have a mare exactly this same thing. We did the blood allergy testing andsheβs Allergic to ALOT. Started doing allergy shots and also using a Transpirator system. It is really helping. Canβt wait to see the difference once the allergy shots get in her system.

This same mare also gets albuterol in the nebulizer.
