Location: Laramie, WY | My 16 hands Gelding by FirewaterOnTheRocks has amazing speed & I just started running him in a Dennis Moreland hackamore on smaller patterns and love it! However...on a larger standard pattern or in bigger/open arenas he runs hard and it’s hard to get him to slow up and rate 1st and 2nd barrel. Any suggestions on an alternative bit to try? Thank u. |

| Following because I am having the same trouble. I run my mare in a o ring twisted Eire ruffle with dog bone in the middle and she's been getting a little cocky. She takes off in the alley and runs by the 1st. Her 2nd and 3rd are perfect. I've had her teeth done and she's been vetted. She's just taking the bit and running so hard she can't gear down to catch the 1st. I've run her in a stivers hack and liked it but she's a little touchy in it. I've been wanting to try something else. |

| I had to put my hard running rocket mare in a combo. I had it custom made so it really wasn't harsh - just effective. It was a lifter with only 3" of shank, with a large broken twisted mouth piece and a copper roller instead of dogbone (so a three piece overall), standard hack noseband completed it. I could work that mare at a walk or trot in a piece of baling twine, but once she hit a three beat gait it was game on. I could still lope circle work in a snaffle type bit or simple hack, but to harness her ability to rate and turn it took both mouth AND nose control. |

Thank you, I think it might be good to try a three-piece combo with nose band and see how that works on him.
My horse is the same way you can ride and warm him up in absolutely anything but when he’s ready to run he’s like a rocket, lol. |

| Keep bit the same. Try a tie down or a bonnet only on the large patterns. Example: Last year when Kassie rode Jr in a bonnet at Houston because it was a wide open arena and she needed him to rate vs. he ran bonnet free at the NFR bc it's a trap.

So I have tried the wired bonnet thing awhile ago...but wasn’t a fan… and I am not too big on tiedowns but would you try either of these with a hackamore? |

Last night at Houston Tiany S. rode Showmance in a combo bit and a headsetter type tiedown
Hailey K. runs sister in a combo and a tiedown.
If your horse has never had a certain type of head gear work them with in on in the round pen first before you get on and let them see how it feels when they hit it etc...it'll help you know if to adjust it longer or shorter. BE AWARE if your horse isn't really sitting down and using themselves this well get them to and most get sore from it bc they have not been doing it. |
