I'm considering buying a mare sight unseen long distance - like across the country. Unfortunately due to weather conditions it is proving to be a challenge to get a transport set up. The soonest we can get someone to haul her is in about a month. The seller wants me to pay for the horse in full right now, even though it will be a month before she leaves there. I have already paid for an extensive vet check and have offered to pay a non-refundable deposit, but the seller doesn't want to agree to that. I don't think I should pay in full until right before the mare gets picked up just in case something happens to her.

Anyone been in this situation? I want to be reasonable but don't know what the standard in the industry is in this type of scenario.
Any opinions or solutions?

I have done this several times and always paid for the horse in full upfront. In one case, I also paid board for a few weeks.
The seller needs to make a sale, they should not lose the sale because something happened to the horse after you agreed to buy it and they lost out on other potential buyers.
My best advice would be to find transport sooner.

You need to pay in full. Take out insurance on the horse to protect yourself in the case that something happens to it before you get it shipped.

This, the flip side is the seller holds the horse for a month for you with a deposit and you back out for some reason and the seller has turned away other buyers during that month.

I’ve been in this situation a couple of times. I always paid when I knew I wanted the horse - even if I was having a hard time arranging transport.

The horse needs to be paid for. I sold a horse long distance. Hauled her to OK where she stayed at my parents for 2 weeks before she was hauled to her final destination. She was completely paid for prior to my taking her off my property to my moms.

I’d recommend insurance in case something happens so you are covered.

If I were the seller, I would require the same thing. Horse needs to be paid for in full before I would set up anything with a shipper.

Hypothetically, they could also charge you board for one month but doesn’t sound like they are doing that.

You need to pay for the horse now if not then move on so the owners can get it sold, they are risking the horse sitting there to, not fair to ask them to wait untill you can find a shipper and pay for it then, they know theres a risk of you backing out any time and they are losing a sell wanting on you. Like SaraJean said pay for the horse and get insurance and then I would offer to pay for the care and feeding of the horse till its shipped.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
I've never bought a horse long distance before so I wasn't sure.
I will pay in full now.
