What are the drills you do to get your horses feet quicker? And, then drills to keep their hip up underneath them? My mare is bigger thoro built mare that tends to want to have slow feet and has started wanting to kick her hip out. TIA

I really like this one. It covers a lot of areas; catching leads, engaging hips, quickening feet, etc...

I know of a counter arc figure 8 drill that is used to quicken up feet on the backside. You approach and go around the barrel like normal but on the backside you pick up into a counter arc and go back to the barrel and then go around barrel like normal again.

My friend just showed me drill that has helped my horse get his butt under himself at the first barrel. You can do it all lefts, all rights, or just the pattern. You get to your rate point either at a trot of slow lope, stop and immediately back them 3-4 steps. Then without a break you get your horse to lope around the barrel and go to your next one repeating the steps.

I love starting horses on the poles. It really teaches them
(especially young ones
) how to move their feet, easily transition leads, and use their hind end/stay collected. Plus, good pole horses are VERY marketable, if you decide to sell them.
