We just bought a place and it comes will a large round pen. Unfortunately at the moment the pen is just grass. I want to put good footing in there because it will be my primary place to work my horses until we can put time and money into creating an outdoor arena. I want footing where I can canter a small circle without the footing giving out. I've been told do a layer of rock, limestone, then sand, but how much if each? Side note: I live it the Midwest so we get ice and a lot of rain if that's makes a difference. Thanks!

We are in the PNW so LOTS of rain. We put 3-4" of 5/8 minus (driveway rock) packed it then 4-5" sand on top. Rode year round no issues, worked our barrel and cutting horses. Just make sure to float it between rides, or when expecting a lot of precipitation, so it drains.
Always got compliments on our pen!
