I recently bought a 7” gullet saddle. While I LOVE the saddle, it’s a bit wide for my horse. It doesn’t touch her withers, just sits a little forward and the back sits up a bit. Which in turn, makes me sit a little forward. I currently ride in a 3/4 5 Wool pad. Any suggestion on a saddle pad? Also, I’m wanting something smaller than 30x30.

If your saddle dont fit now its not going to fit any better with a thicker pad, If I were you I would just sell this saddle and get one that fits your horse better.. For now you could shim it for a quick fix but I would not do the shimming for very long, a good fitting saddle is what you need for your horse.. What brand is your saddle?

Try shimming your saddle for awhile and see how that go's..

I would try shimming and revisit fit often as your horse changes shape.

I wouldn’t go any thicker than the pad your using. You could try something like a CSI, but from what you’re describing you’ll likely have to shim as well.

You can custom order a 7/8 or 1 inch 5 star pad in several different lengths or widths.  28 x 28 is going to be pretty small though.  I'd measure your saddle skirt and talk to a dealer who could help you decide measurement.  RockyRoad (Deanna) on here is awesome to work with!

I've spent a bajillion dollars buying 5487843548979874 saddles and selling trying to find that perfect ride and fit.  Finally found the saddle I love that works perfect for me, but my horse is a bit downhill and everything digs into the back of her shoulders just because of the way she's built.  I've always been a saddleright fan, but I traded a new 5 Star pad for a very used CorrecTOR pad and i'm blown away as to the difference it's made.  Love the fact you can move the shims around to get your saddle perfectly balanced both front to back and side to side.  I love my saddle, but that pad is by far the best investment i've made, even though it is very used and needs to be cleaned terribly.

If the angle of the bars is okay but the gullet is too wide, you sometimes can make it work with a shim.

However is the bar angle is too wide, you will have pressure points and shimming will not work. You will need to get a different saddle.

So it really depends what exactly is “too wide” when you say it’s too wide.

This. My bar angle was too wide on my shiloh and I did the 5 star with a shim and it made her really sore. So now I’m back to square one. Yay.
