NJJ - 2018-06-05 9:03 AM My question has always been ....WHY do people buy a GRADE (being sold WITHOUT papers) horse and then expect to be able to get papers or get it registered? .... your problem is WITH the seller!
What’s wrong with trying? Just because someone bought it without papers doesn’t mean they can’t try to locate them. I don’t understand why you have such an issue with someone trying to find papers to a horse they own? None of this pertains to the horse in question, I just don’t understand why you have your feathers ruffled over someone else trying to get papers on their horse. Maybe they wouldn’t have been able to afford the horse if it were papered... maybe papers didn’t matter to them then but do now... maybe they realized how hard it is to sell an unreg horse nowadays... could be lots of things but at the end of the day it’s not your horse, not your problem?
WHY? Because you (not you personally but plural) bought a GRADE horse and, more than likely, at a DISCOUNT....THEN, you expect the AQHA, Jockey Club or past owners to jump through hoops to get you a REGISTERED horse. If you wanted or needed a registered horse then you should BUY a registered horse. Usually, there is a good reason that a horse is sold as "GRADE" (WITHOUT papers) ..... past owners don't want to be associated with said horse....said horse has mental or health problems ..... said horse is not fertile ..... said horse is NOT what it is advertised regarding training or competition ......Seller is a sleazy horse trader and never HAD papers .... etc, etc etc ......
I don’t think asking AQHA or the jockey club to do the job they get paid to do is asking them to jump through hoops, but that’s just my OP. And honestly... most horses are sold as grade because people are lazy and irresponsible. Not because it’s lame or crazy. And like I mentioned before, what if papers weren’t important then, but are now? What if they aren’t a massive issue, but hey, why not see if we can get them... if all it took to get papers on a horse was a little leg work a person would be crazy not to do it. Saying someone helping to locate papers on a horse that works at AQHA or the jockey club is like saying asking a waitress for ketchup is too much to ask.... it’s their J-O-B lol.
Its not AQHA's responsibility to keep up with all the owners papers, its not AQHA's fault that owners wont keep up with their own papers and then some owners lose papers, its the owners that are responsible for their papers, if you dont know the horses register number or the name of last said owners and papers are lost its not AQHA's fault. Its the seller's responsibility. If you bought this horse knowing papers were not in hand of the seller then dont blame AQHA or the JC for not being able to help you, the register number is very important in location of the horse in the AQHA's register directory.
It sounds like you’ve got your panties in a bunch over this. It is not AQHA’s responsibility to keep up with papers, but it is their job to assist AQHA members/owners in registration paper- related matters. I called them and ask them to answer registration and tattoo related questions. Is that in their job description? I did not ask the m to physically do anything for me or my situation. (That’s like saying it’s not the waitresses fault you didn’t know you wanted ketchup when you ordered, but now you do, so get it yourself.) I’m not “blaming” anybody for anything, just simply trying to see if I can locate the papers. I’m not getting upset with anyone for them not being in my hand. And both the AQHA and JC have been very helpful. I’m starting to be grateful (hopeful) you don’t work there 0.o
Back off of roxie, you're the one who is getting extremely defensive about this subject especially since you bought the horse without papers. If it's Jockey Club, they will not give you a duplicate unless you follow these steps:

Complete a duplicate certificate form and submit the following to The Jockey Club:

  • Four (4) color photographs clearly indicating all identifying markings taken from the front, rear and both sides. If no identifying markings are present, please submit a fifth (5th) photograph of a close-up of the face indicating all cowlicks present

  • Bill of sale from owner or other form of proof of ownership.

  • Notarized statement from the owner or authorized agent describing in detail how the certificate of foal registration was lost or destroyed.

Miss Roxie is one of the most helpful folks ever. . . . I think AQHA would only be benefited by her

I agree .... Roanie Ponie is the only one who seems to be wired a little TOO tight ....... because others DON'T agree with her .....

I guess I’m not understand what you mean by me being upset that people don’t agree with me. I’m not upset about any of it, and there was nothing to agree or disagree with from the original post. I just ask about if there is any way I am not aware of to get papers on this horse, or research it more, and I got a bunch of “you don’t deserve papers.”

Seems like an inquiry turned into an argument. I’m not sure what I’m being defensive about by claiming there is nothing wrong with someone trying to locate papers. Maybe you guys are reading my posts in snarky tones, but no, I am not upset about this at all. It literally affects my daily life zero. It’s just become interesting to me just how much a few people think I am in the wrong for investigating this horses pedigree and looking for possible papers.

Commenting on a few things.

People don't pull papers because they are lazy. There are a wide range of why people pull papers.
Price was cheaper without papers.
Horse was TB and person could get more money for QH type
Aging horse but could sell for more lying about the age
Conformational flaw, don't want it traced back to them.
Papers pulled as people didn't think the horse should reproduce.
Soundness issue, sent it to auction to can it and get a little return of their investment.

If the person told you you would get the papers hopefully you have some record of it, take the person to small claims.

My understanding is aqha will only test if you have a name or the sire and dam.

UC Davis I heard is easier to deal with

TB they test DNA via blood, not sure if they will do a blind match.

Just wanted to say thank you to all that tried to be helpful! We ended our search a while ago, wasn't that big of a deal. She's not a mare we would breed or anything. Just a whim because she did turn out to be a big, well built, awesome performer. Would like to know what lines produced a horse like her. She would be something that would make a dang good step up horse for a kid, which is what will sell her, we just knew she would sell faster/ easier with papers (especially due to her age). We did fill out the JC form online and sent pictures so who knows? The lady on the phone from there was awesome to talk to.

And while there are reasons some horses papers are "lost," I will have to agree to disagree that most of the time it's something massive and intentional. If this horse's papers are "lost" because something is wrong with her, it hasn't come out in 5 years, and I'm pretty confident it won't :)

Thanks again to all who tried to be helpful!!!!
