| What does everyone use for electrolytes? My gelding coliced Monday evening after a weekend of hard work....even though he drank very well (or so I thought) he got super dehydrated. After a gallon of mineral oil and a jug of electrolytes he is home and better. With all of that lol what does everyone use for Electrolytes? |

| I really like Apple A Day. It's inexpensive and easy to find if you're on the road and run out.
I also keep Ortho Equine Immediate Response paste on hand. When given at the first sign, it will stop a colic. I've seen it work more than once. It's a must have. |

| I started using electrolytes earlier this year - but after reading a lot, I read that they could actually cause an imbalance.
My horses all drink well and I haven’t had any problems....so I’m taking the “don’t try to fix what isn’t broken” approach.
But still like to read what others do and why!! |

He drank well this weekend he drank 3 buckets Saturday when he was used alot and sunday he drank a bucket but he was just standing. He got super dehydrated therefore coliced from it 2 different vets told me he needed to be on a electrolyte. I have not ever used electrolytes before but him just drinking water did not sustain him enough this weekend and they have free choice salt every day |

It is very tasty to them and so they will drink it readily. I also give my horse soaked beet pulp shreds with some of this added in a day before and during competitions, and often for the day after we get home. It helps to keep things moving and keep them hydrated. Alsways offer plain water along with the e-lyte water.
Keep in mind that if your horse is on grass pasture at home...and you take them to an event and have them suddenly switched to hay...that too can cause an issue. Hydration is even more important when all they have to do is stand and eat hay between rides.

so what do you do if your horse is on grass at home, then you haul somewhere and offer hay? Any sort of supplement? |

Location: NC | Mine get electrolytes at night with grain when its hot. Then when we go to barrel race we bring along gatorade for them as well as us. They love it and while it may have sugar in it, mixing it with their regular water dilutes it a bit. |

I mostly compete in distance trail and endurance now...but the same 'rules of hydration" apply. If I'm headed to an event on the weekend I "preload" his gut with soaked beet pulp mash meals starting the day before we leave. I soak it for a few hours and make a soup of his dinner. I will add the elyte to that beet pulp. If it's a long haul he gets soaked beet pulp at a rest break since I know he will not drink water on a stop. no elyte then just soup.
And...he gets a bucket of elyte water along side his regular water at the event, and since he is on hay at the event I'll offer him a soupy beet pulp mash for his regular meals (mixed with his regular feed ration and soupy). Basically trying to keep his gut hydrated throughout the event. If he isn't drinking the elyte water or it's a hot sweaty event he gets it in the soup. (provided he is drinking water as well and staying hydrated)
I repeat the process on the trip home.
Keep in mind that for the sport I do now these horses are monitored by the Vet Judge throughout the event for hydration and gut sounds etc. So not only do I know this has helped him metabolically...it shows in his scores. I also often volunteer and work with the ride vets. So I see what other folks do and where they have issues. Preparing before the event and making sure they don't start out already compromised from a long haul is important. Knowing you are switching from grass to hay only matters as well. So giving them some added hydration by soupy mash, bucket of elyte water, or some like water with a scoop of rice bran in it to get them to drink can truly help.

| There is also Hydration Hay from Purina that you can take with you. Put it in a bucket and wet it down and it expands and it is also hydrated. |
