I got a new to me saddle and it's not even broken in yet so it squeaks when I ride. Any tips on how to oĂŻl it and soften it a bit? Its a double J, so its not cheap leather or anything but I want to condition it good. I usually use mink oĂŻl(like the stuff you put on your boots) on my saddles and just clean them with a damp cloth, but I wanna hear what you guys do.
Thanks

My FAVORITE leather conditioner is by far Effax leather balsam. I use it on all leather from saddles to boots. It smells great also and will give you very soft hands and it doesn't leave things oily or sticky.

^^^^ THIS .... usually squeaks are the jockey leather rubbing against the saddle tree ..... liberally pour baby powder under the jockeys ......

do a light oil up under the back strap by the tree. no need to oil the saddle for a couple years as it is already treated with a coating to protect it, unless of course you plan on swimming with it real soon. using the saddle regular is better for it than sitting in tack room looking pretty. when you do oil it will darken the leather and there is nothing, nada, zilch you can do about it and oil from the bottom side or it will not soak it...cause it is treated.

My Double J's only ever get 100% neatsfoot oil. On the tooling I may do a top coat of Skidmore's or Black Rock.

I don't think Mink oil is good, but I have read a saddle maker say "anything is better than nothing." Only use Neatsfoot or Olive Oil. They are best. I paint it on with a paint brush in thin layers until the leather is supple again. Only after a good scrub of course. Lots of soap, water & elbow grease. Same process with roughout too!

Edited to add: I oil the top, bottom, & any nook and cranny I can get my paint brush in. No need to be scared to oil the top or rough out. It soaks in fine.
