Just curious, i decided its time for my 2 year old to starting going to the barrel races with my other horses a 7 year old and a 3 year old. I took her Friday and she handled it like a champ but I was just curious about what others do. I like having 3 in the trailer so 2 can hang out while I run.

My last yearling I started hauling as a yearling, but she took to the trailer extremely well. My current yearling is easy going, can stand tied and handles new places well, but he’s really having a hard time stepping into and out of the trailer. He’s not scared once he gets in, but he’s super clumsy and he keeps scaring himself by tripping as he gets in or out.

Instead of turning the trailer experience into a bad one, I’m going to pony him all around the fields/trails at the house this summer and let him figure out how to use his legs before I really start working with him on loading again. We’ve got a lot logs and ditches I can take him over. I’m not too worried about him needing the hauling experience at this young age because he already doesn’t care about a whole lot.

Mine go as late yearlings or early 2 year olds if I have room in the trailer.

I’ve hauled my yearling to a couple of shows this year. She loads well on the trailer and is happy to hang out at the trailer with a buddy. I’ll walk her around a bit on her own to let her see things or hose her off, but she gets antsy to go back to the trailer.

Well I'm taking my yearling to a barrel race that is quite a ways from home this weekend....going to treat him like I would any other horse! He has been hauled a few other times locally to an indoor arena when I needed to ride indoors this past winter.

Ours go once they can stand tied nice and quiet for a long period of time. I don't think they really learn much if they're screaming and climbing my trailer the whole time.
