| Got a horse who’s had some skin funk show up. It started a few days ago as a small patch on his shoulder and has spread to both shoulders and his barrel.
To run your hands over the area feels rough and we can see dry flaky skin. I think the rough feeling is from the flaky skin and not a hive. If it is a hive it’s very very small.
My initial thought was we haven’t been rinsing or bathing them much this summer, perhaps just a build up of sweat and fly spray etc. Last night I bathed him with what we had on hand - mane and tail shampoo - and added some iodine in case it’s a fungal funk.
This morning there’s no change. I wasn’t expecting it to go away overnight but maybe I thought we’d see at least some improvement?
It doesn’t seem to be bothering him, doesn’t react or seem sensitive.
No diet changes, we have 7 head who all get the same feed and hay and he’s the only one with it.
Thoughts, experiences? I plan to keep him rinsed off and see what the local feed store has for shampoo tonight. |

| I would use an anti-fungal on him. Then, treat your saddle pads and girths also. I like Corona Fung-A-Way. |

Location: LA Lower Alabama | You sure it is not sunburn? It tends to creep up where they sweat then the sun bakes the wet skin. Or rain rot but it tends to leave actual scabs that take the hair with it. |

Doesn’t look like the sunburn cases I’ve seen.
Rain rot isn’t impossible, but I wouldn’t say we’ve had condusive conditions. Drought, temps have been pleasant and humidity low the past week or so.
I’m going to look for an anti-fungal/microbial shampoo tonight and try that. Tempted to do a course of Benadryl too in case it is an allergic reaction? |

I can get some pictures, the fact that it is spreading is what has me concerned.
No trees.
I’m leaning towards an allergy or possible a rogue case of rain rot - we have had a bloom of flies here lately and I’ve read that can cause it in some cases too. Going to get some fungus amungus ordered to have in hand.

Location: Louisiana | I have a gelding who has gone completely bald the past 3 summers with nasty rain rot. I tried everything to stop it, and prevent it.
So far this year he hasn't had one spot come up at all...we moved them to a new pasture before summer and I'm now convinced it was something he was exposed to in the back pasture. All I've done this year is rinse him off in the evenings when he's sweaty. Normally by this time of year he's missing all the hair on his butt and back, right now he's a little underweight (summer as a whole is rough on him) but his coat is slick and shiny. |

| Here’s a picture
It looks like bad dandruff, but it’s not brushing right off. It doesn’t feel like there are bumps on the skin itself, just a rough feeling from the flakes. I sprayed it last night with an iodine spray as well - all I could get my hands on locally in a pinch.
He’s got some patches on his shoulders - but the worst spots are over his barrel. I am pretty certain it’s either a fungus or a reaction to buildup of gunk, I religiously use a BOT liner with this one and I’ve been leaving one in the trailer since we’ve been hauling so much, wondering if the lack of airflow in the tack room has allowed a funk to grow...needless to say they’re all in the washing machine now.

| Happy to say it looks MUCH improved this morning. He’ll get another bath this evening I think and we’ll stay the course with the iodine spray for a few more days and make sure to keep him rinsed off.
Ill chalk it up the Murphy’s Law - a horse will be a perfect picture of health until you list them for sale. |

Location: LaBelle, Florida | My mare has sensitive skin and is allergic to noseums. I have to be careful spraying bug spray on her. I have to dilute it or only spray every 3 days. I also have to rinse her whether I ride her or not.
I would definetly anitfungal wash everything that is on the horse or touches the horse. The rinse with vinegar/water solution (neutralizes all soap/conditioner products) and the rinse off.

| Seems to have just been a build up of stuff and a dander explosion... a couple baths and some iodine spray for good measure and he’s good to go.
