Location: Montgomery TX | So I'm looking at a paint mare - and it really looks like her sire is her dam's sire also - is that something y'all would be concerned about?
I always heard that if it produces a good horse, its line breeding, if they're crazy its inbreeding...
I am not necessarily looking to breed her in the future - I just really like her disposition, she seems to be real willing and super cute. Pulled her out of the pasture after a year or so off and she walked right off - not even a hint of a hump or anything. |

| If you like her then what are you worried about. I don't think there have been any confirmed cases of "crazy" as a direct result of inbreeding. However there have been concentrations of genetic problems when breeders are unwilling to cull. Culling is the difference between line breeding and in breeding. If the breeder is concentrating favorable genetic traits it can be a good thing. |

Location: Montgomery TX | I do like her - and I'm not really worried, more curious because it's not something I know anything about. And I know that there are people like yourself who have extensive breeding knowledge.

Location: Illinois | I agree, if you like her and she doesn't have any major flaws then I wouldn't let it stop you. If it was something you wanted to breed then I'd say maybe. I have a pet peeve with even one horse being on the papers twice, I like variety. I personally like the idea of creating new combos that work vs just breeding the same crosses all the time. But again that's just a personal preference. I wouldn't ever breed a daughter back to her own father just because that seems weird and kinda gross to me, lol. But I've seen a lot of it. I saw one not too long ago with Dash For Cash on the papers 5 times and people were all over it commenting to buy. I'd pass on on like that because again, too many other nice options there. There's a difference between preserving a good line/traits and "over-flooding" for lack of better word. |

If you like her and she has no obvious problems caused by the close breeding and you're not going to breed her or sell her for breeding stock, then there's no problem. "Close" breeding is when the same horse appears in the pedigree more than once in the second or third generation. People who have researched pedigrees and breeding methods aren't bothered nearly as much by close, line or inbreeding as people who know little about what makes good animals. Breeding that close is actually used to help locate animals that are undesirable recessive free. Breeding the stallion back to his daughters was standard practice. Many of the great breeders of early quarter horses did it. If the foal from a close breeding has some issue, they know that stallion is not "clean" of undesirable recessive genes. So they might (should) castrate him.

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | If you like her and she didnt throw you off or act like a ding dong when you rode her and she's been sitting for a year and shes super cute as you say then I would not have any problems at all buying her, no concerns at all.
