| Help! I am horse buying and finally found the horse of my dreams! Everything is perfect... we had vet check and she has a fusing joint on distal hock joint on the left only??? She is completely sound. The owner runs her on bute, but told me she does that to keep all her horses comfortable.. is that a thing? Anyways would you purchase a horse with fusing hock if she showed no signs of lameness?

| Personally, I feel this is a pretty common thing and would not deter me from buying if the horse is otherwise sound.

Location: Texas | The risk of buying a horse with a fusing hock is you don't know how much the horse will fuse on its own or how long it will take before its done. So it may be a no big deal thing where you only inject it for a short while, or it may drag out years and become lame at a later date. That's what you don't know, and you have to be OK with that risk, and be prepared to inject hocks. Of all the things that can show up on a pre purchase, I would take hock OA over plenty of other things. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | we have an 18 yr old with a fusing hock. Have tried every kind of injection for 3 yrs to help him be sound and useful. Finally tried to force it to fuse with alcohol to no avail. He lives on Previcox and will be retired as soon as we can find something to replace him. After dealing with this gelding, I would never buy another that isn't either clean x rayed or already fused. |

| I agree with CasualDust. I want to add to that I would consider the horse's age and how long have they known the horse is trying to fuse? Some never quit fusing and it gets more painful and can be career ending. The fusing hock is definitely grounds to re-negotiate on the sales price and offer less. |

| I bought one with both hocks fusing, gave previcox while running alot but the horse never seemed bothered without it, it was more for my peace of mind, keep them turned out if you can. If that is the only issue I would not be deterred. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | It seems like most horses go through this at some point. Some start sooner, some later. If it was just the hocks and fairly manageable (i.e. the horse is currently doing well and can be maintained), I certainly wouldn't hesitate too much. |

Fusing hocks are very common.
Inject the horse, use Previcox/Equioxx if they need it, and go about your day!
I would not personally give a horse bute on a regular basis to "keep them comfortable". Too many side effects.
A fusing hock would not deter me one bit. I've got 2 in the process of fusing right now.

Folks on-line
