One of our geldings have been diagnosed with a rim fracture of his coffin bone on his front right.   He has been just ever so slightly off.  Every once in a while you can feel he didn’t step right or see just a slight head bob.  It is so slight our vet wasn’t actually too concerned while we were doing the lamenes exam. No reaction to flexing or hoof testers, but I still pushed for X-rays... and turns out we have a rim fracture on the coffin bone.

Vet reccomended a shoe with pads and clips (to help with restricting the hoof expanding), 3-5 months rest, and to feed Platinum Performance Osteon.

Anyone else have experience with this?  What therapies did you try that worked or did not work?  Supplements?

Lot's of time in a really deeply bedded stall and hope for the best.

Don't rush it, even if you want to.

My stallion had this same fracture when he was 7-8 yo.  He's 14 now so that was 7-8 years ago.  I'm so sorry that I don't remember the exact route to healing we used. But I can say he healed completely and went back to running with no issues. It was this injury that moved me toward barefoot since his fracture was caused by bad farrier work. After Zans fracture healed I did just that.  All of my horses are now barefoot.

As long as a coffin bone fracture is non-articular they heal just fine after 3-4 months with the treatment plan you’ve been given.  I have a horse they recovered sound from the same thing and he gave me years of good runs and miles of trail riding!  He’s 25 and retired now!

Just wanted to say we used the Osteon for a different problem, and I would recommend it. Good luck with your boy

Did he have a full recovery?  Or was only sound enough to be a youth rodeo horse?

Thank you - We are moving forward with the plan he set.   Started Osteon on Saturday, getting new shoes today, and pray for the best
