I live in Georgia and each year I am hit for about $350 for tag registration for my horse trailer. It is a 2008 3 horse LQ Keifer. It kills me to pay this amount. I bought it from another person, not a dealer. Is there a way to avoid this high registration fees? I have a F450 that is my primary farm vehicle that is used to haul this trailer and I rarely go out of state. When I questioned the local tag office they told me that there is no way around this. I do have property in Alabama also that is about 20miles from my house and am thinking about registering in alabama if necessary. It has a Georgia title. I cant find anything online about AG/farm tags for Georgia to avoid paying this advalorum taxes each year.

My 3 horse is $20/year. They asked me ZERO questions when I went for a tag. Never asked me value or price.

Is it being registered as a "recreational vehicle" (RV)?

In Iowa all trailers are $ 10 a year. Horse trailers are just considered like an Ag livestock trailer.

Not true? All of ours are more than that here in a Mahaska county. Not $350 more, but not $10. I think our big LQ is $50 or $60? I can’t remember.

They bend you over like that here in Kansas too unless you can register it as an RV.

We live in GA also.  We bought our trailer from out of state.  So, with the new law that was passed 4-5 years ago, since we didn't pay GA sales tax to purchase it, we must pay a higher fee each year to register our trailer.  It is $432/yr.  And, it is a 2004 4 Star.

Our 2018 F350 to renew the tag is $27ish.  Because we bought and paid the sales tax in GA.

There is no way around it in GA if you didn't pay sales tax at the time of purchase.

We bought ours brand new in GA, paid taxes in GA, and still pay the $350/year.

I agree that I don’t think there’s a way around it....but am following just in case!!
