Location: MO | To start...I HATE selling anything, let alone a horse.
How do you write an ad for a horse that doesn't include every cliche' thing that gets on peoples nerves that are honest situations.
Example...I don't get along with his running style but he could be your next superstar. Ok, so I pushed it with the superstar status but I honestly think someone else could do so much better with him. That's just one thing that I want to write but I know people roll their eyes when they read that type of stuff.
Maybe I should add "He's for sale, not on sale'. I think that's my favorite. LOL (No, I will NOT be putting that on the ad)

I dont care about the sellers opinions on how great the horse could be.
EVERYONE asks why are you selling so that would be good to ad in.
Blah, Blah... I want to see videos of how the horse moves, how it performs (good and bad) and want to know any health issues or habits it may have. Personality for me... spookie, deadhead, etc. and pedigree. Yep you cant always ride papers but yes you do!
My worst pet peeve is "I really hate to do this" or "after long consideration i regretfully" or "due to no fault of his own" LOLOL
Just tell the facts honestly as you know them, price with your head not your heart (on a going horse price what he is now not what you think he could be later), show clear videos (trot, canter, then on the pattern) and great still pictures.

Location: South Georgia | I'd much rather read an honest description just like how you naturally told us about how you think he could do much better with someone else, than a cliche superstar, etc. sales pitch. Just be natural.
And if I'm completely honest, I kind of get turned off when I read that a horse does not match a seller's style. I know I shouldn't, but I guess I just get a negative connotation over that. It makes me wonder if the horse is really ticky or I wonder if I'd have a similar style to the seller and not jive with the horse either. Just being honest. |

Location: N Texas | My biggest pet peeve is an ad written from the point of view of the horse. "My person just doesn't have time for me but I'm a really good boy and love treats". Ugh, makes the owner sound like an idiot who doesn't know the first thing about horses.
I don't know why I hate this so much but it's like nails on a chalkboard when I read "he needs some groceries". Just some of the "creative" ways people come up with to explain simple stuff is obnoxious, lol.
I personally wouldn't say "could be your next superstar", I'd just say something like "I don't feel like I'm the right person to take him to his full potential" or something like that. |

I thought I was the only one that felt this way, I agree with you 100%! I feel like the majority of ads I see lately say this same thing and I just stop reading. |

This!! I also do not care what your opinion is on the ability of the horse. I get all the time, why are you selling? Okay, I bred, raised and trained horse, hes 8 years old now, hes 1D running with ME as the jockey, its ready to move on and continue with someone else... I've got more coming up. I don't sugar coat anything. Here is the horse, here are videos, here are pics, either come look or not. I will say, as a seller, the worst is when I say I am not taking offers, someone comes look, loves, and offers me $5k less.. sorry, I already said no. You don't ever really make what you put in. |

Location: Deep South | When I'm reading ads I don't care what the seller thinks the horse "can" do. Pretty much everyone puts something about how the horse is not running to its full potential and just needs the "right person." I want to know what it has DONE. With vids and stats to back it up. If I read an ad that says the horse has ran 1D with other people but we just "don't click" then I want to see results proving it has ran 1D with other people.
If you're running top of the 3D but the horse is consistently stepping off the third barrel and you think that's costing you time, but haven't been able to correct it. Just an example, but I appreciate a seller who is honest about something like that and it gives me something to look for and say I think we can overcome that and pick up at least 1/2 second. |

Location: Claremore, OK | Stick to good, basic info in your ad. Use good pictures and have at least one good video. You’re not going to convince someone to buy a horse by using cliches. Interested parties will contact you where you can go into more detail. |

Location: Iowa | I always look at the ads of the horses that have been sold. Obviously, they had success! Most seem to be very basic: tell the breeding, the training, the disposition and have good conformation pictures and a video link. Best of luck selling!

Location: Canada | Great pictures, good videos showing the horse moving and competing if applicable and recent stats. I prefer ads that detail the information on the horse -name, sex, breed, age height, what its UTD on, any vices or issues. Then I like to read about the horse and its level of training and if competing where it is landing in the Ds and sizes of jackpots. A 1D horse at jackpots that have 10 people isnt the same as a 1D horse that completes at 100+ .
I want to see a price. I hate ads without prices unless the horse is young and in training and just starting as the price will increase with stats. If the horse is aged I want to see a price because it makes me think you believe in the horse and the price you've set is reflective of what you believe they are worth.
Also I pass ads with the saying I'm considering selling... either you are or aren't. |
