I have a 2015 Chevy Cruze that I love! I commute 60 miles a day in it. It's very comfortable, has get up and go, and if I keep my lead foot under control it gets about 30 miles a gallon. I was sad when I heard they weren't going to make them anymore.

I used to have a little Ford Focus a few years ago. I got about 37 mpg highway. It was a good car. I now have a Dodge Dart, which I love but doesn’t get the mpg that the ford did.

I am what they call a "super communter".  5k a month easy.  The last 2 cars I had were Subarus and I would highly recommend them.  I first had an Outback which I traded in at 184k for a Crosstrek.  The Crosstrek got around 32-33 mpg until I hit a deer and totalled it.  I truly am not completely sure I would have crawled out of that bad boy if it hadn't been a Subaru.  They have a very strong brand following.  When buying a new car, I did a little research as I wanted something a little bigger and higher up than the Crosstrek (though I have nothing bad to say about that car) and went with a Buick Encore which I LOVE LOVE LOVE.  Not as great a gas mileage (26 ish right now) but I have forgotten to turn it off - that new push button thing threw me off - and often leave it running because Spike, the love of my life, is getting old and needs the heater on.  Sorry to be so wordy!

I have a 2017 Toyota Corolla. Gets between 36/38. Never have had a problem out of it yet. While I really like this car. Wish we would of kept our 2014 Kia Rio. It got 40+ mpg. and had the 100k mile warranty.

Get something with all wheel drive (awd) so it can handle any type of weather!!! If you are not purchasing brand new, purchase from an individual and not a used car dealer unless it still has a warranty!!

If you are commuting in Japan then buy Japanese. If commuting in America buy American.

Does that apply to everything you purchase, or just vehicles? Are all of your clothes, electronics, etc only made in America?

I had a 2010 Toyota Corolla for 7 years and it was the best car! Maintenance was cheap too! The only reason I sold it is because I was basically given a newer car and it was hard to pass up.

I am surprised you like your Cruze's. I think theyre not making them due to the problems they had. I had a 2013 I think it was and it spent more time in the shop than my driveway. It had hundred of recalls on top of issues in general. My heat didn't work half the time, smelled like anti-freeze. It was bad. As soon as I got it paid off enough, I traded it for a Dodge Dart which I do really like.

I only tell you my Cruze experience so you don't buy an "older" model, maybe the newer ones are better.

I'm not saying its the best (ask 10 people you'll get 10 answers on whats the best), but I have a 2011 Chevy Cruze LTZ as my commuter car; I put approximately 130 miles/day on it.

I've had a few small issues, biggest one was the water pump was leaking but that was covered under an extended warranty.

I get about 33 mpg during the summer, winter isn't as good.

It gets around good in the snow, but I have dedicated Bridgestone Blizzak winter tires on it right now.

Drawbacks to it are
1. Lack of power- it has no get-up and go from a dead stop
2. small back seat-not an issue for me as I rarely have passengers

My wife has a 2011 Kia Optima, it is a decent car. However it just got a new re-manufactured long-block due to the engine blowing up (common problem with Kia's with that engine) It was covered by a recall as well, didn't cost anything to get it fixed and we were provided a rental car as well.

Buy American made whatever it is.

In years past the Toyota Camry has been the most "American made" car- most parts made here...….currently Jeep Cherokee is #1 with three Hondas also being in the top ten. American made has more to do with the parts in the car not necessarily where the car originates from. Jeep is now part of Fiat-Chrysler but is 72% American parts.
