Truck and Trailer question

We are looking at getting a 6-8 horse trailer. What is the best truck to pull a big trailer? We have looked at Ford F450s but have also considered a small semi type truck. We live in Idaho and have big hills so we needs something with quite a bit of pulling power but also stopping power. Looking for other peoples experiences, good and bad and recommendations. Thanks!!

If this truck is going to be dedicated to the trailer I would get a small semi. Benefits are tires, brakes and weight. If you need the truck for just driving some then I would get the 450. But its a comprimise. The semi will be cheaper to buy and will last a lot longer. But not near as nice to operate. Compare insureance between them.

Thank you! I hadn't thought about an insurance difference. We live in snow country, most of the smaller semi's are 2wd. I've been kind of concerned about that thinking 4wd is a must. It wouldn't be often that I'd pull that big of a trailer in the snow but I've ended up in snow storms with my horses when I hadn't planned on it. Would a semi still be a good option even being 2wd?

With the weight of the loaded trailer on the drive axles and chains, I would think that would offset the lack of a front differential. So, yes it would.
