My husband and I are talking about removing the small 1.25 acre cherry orchard from our property and using that ground for an arena finally! ??These are 40 year old trees with well established root systems. My question is, How hard will it be to get the whole tree and all the roots out???And if anyone has done this previously, what was the ground like afterward? Hard to clean up everything? Anything else that I should be worried about? Any help, tips and ideas are much appreciated! ??

I’m not sure it would be worth the work unless you own the equipment.

Man oh man. We removed a super super small orchard ( probably around 3/4 acre) in our front yard when we first moved in.

We had to use a mini excavator....my husband got one from work. Our trees weren't near as old as yours, probably around 10 years old so it wasnt a huge deal for him to get all of the roots and fill in the holes with the right equipment. He still has a few more trees to remove next time he has the right equipment, but he got it all for the most part.

No tips (I'm sorry!) I just remember doing all that and it wasnt too bad....but ours was quite a bit smaller than yours with way less mature trees. Good luck!

I work for a construction company that does dirt work. I needed an arena and asked my boss to come look at my property. I had originally planned to take in part of my pasture which I didn’t want to do really. Funny thing is my boss said the best area and soil happened to be an overgrown 2 acre patch of the thickest trees on the place growing on what used to be where they mined iron ore. It also was used as a dump by previous owners and was full of snakes. 2 weeks later... it was transformed into the best arena, IMO, that I had ever seen. It was money well spent!!!
He used a dozer and a backhoe. I wish I could post a pic of it.

We did a couple acres of apple trees with a dozer. It was an old orchard that hadn't been irrigated for awhile. We hand picked the small branches. Then used the dozer and a tractor with a backhoe and loader to finish it off. It really wasn't that bad. In fact it went a lot easier than I expected.

When all the orange trees {orchard} were removed from the land that we lived on in the Valley they brought in dozers and used root plows to remove all the roots from all the older trees, the younger tree roots were not as bad..

Cut them down. Drag them out and then use an excavator to remove the stumps. Then a root rake on the ground on the front end loader. Then pick up sticks by hand. We have over 1500 acres of trees in a grove. This works.
