Veteran Posts: 264	Im stuck. I have a 10 year old gelding I purchased who has sat for the last couple years. He has been patterned but not entered a whole lot. The previous owners sold him for the same issue I am dealing with currently. He is extremely chargey and pushy in the bridle when you ask for speed. He is off the track and was used at a match horse. I had him x-rayed, vetted, scoped and he came up clean. He is soft and responsive at the walk, trot, lope but if you ask him to lengthen his stride at a lope he is a mess. I have done a lot of one rein stops when he gets to this point. It seems thats the only thing that he can mentally handle, but there is no improvement. You can tell he doesn't have much work with speed off the track, but he is so mentally fragile I am not sure what exercises that I can do that will make it click. I have played around with multiple bits and even a hack but same response no matter what. Any input or exercises would be greatly appreciated?

Loping her sounded like loping a freight train and would wear your arms and shoulder out trying to keep her at least in check. And she seiously felt like a funny car taking off. However, she rated and turned awesome. So I didn't mess with the equation. Her job was to run barrels, not be a dressage horse. Does your guy run a good pattern? Is it just the takeoff that is way powerful? There are ways to deal with that, but trying to slow one down that is a naturally hard running horse isn't it. Xena actually smoothed out and ran better if I pushed her.

Expert Posts: 5290	I bought one off the track same way. He was the MOST BROKE super nice horse until you made a run. Once those legs got to moving, the brain shut off.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 460	I've had quite a few off the track...and have dealt with a few like this. How fragile minded is he? Can you try lunging him before you ride, to try and get some energy out? I know this can be scary..but you can also try to just let him go..try to hold him back a little if he's going mock 10..but let him run around the arena until he doesn't want to anymore. Then you MAKE him keep going, let it be your idea. Only stop him when you can feel that he's tired and you're in control of the situation. Just a couple of ideas! But I'm not sure how fragile minded he is...I had a mare that I switched in to a hack, and that mostly worked, but she was always on the muscle. So I would give her one of those THE calming cookies before I rode her, and two before a race. That may be an option also! hugs
