No idea. What was the vets advice? We had a ranch gelding get hit on the country road that runs through their pasture. No one stopped, we just found him that way the next day. The vet said his scapula was broken about the middle and nothing could be done for him because he was destroying his pastern on the other leg from holding his weight up. The vet said he would break down soon or develop laminitis in that off foot. So we put him down. I hope you can get yours healed up. Being a baby you have a better chance.

CrossCreek had this happen to a colt one time several years ago. Don't know the extent of the injury but it wasn't pretty at first from my understanding and he went on to be a good barrel horse. I don't think they did an x-ray on the injury but the vet was able to stick his whole hand into the wound. It took a long time to heal completely but it did heal. Had to have his shoulders adjusted a lot by chiropractor to keep him feeling good but other than that did good.

All 4 videos on my channel are of this horse when he was 4 and 5 I think. I haven't uploaded anything to my youtube since lol

We had a baby do this...I don't recall the injury to the bone itself, but she hit the hitch so hard she actually split (not cut) the skin and muscle open. We did lots of hydrotherapy and had her doing great, wound was closing slowly and cleanly...but she developed a bone infection, months after the actual injury, and once it hit her she died within a couple of days.

Overall, it depends on the extent of the damage. The fact that she is a foal is in her favor. A big concern is if the suprascapular nerve is damaged. If that is, you will see the muscle shrink/neurogenic atrophy. This would be a worse prognosis. That’s the nerve that gets damaged when a horse has β€œSweeney”. If the nerve is damaged, it may or may not regenerate to a functional state. Peripheral nerves can take 6-12 months to heal, if they are going to. So if she has nerve damage after a year, it will probably never get better.

I hope she recovers well!

Sorry for the delay guys!!

@ wyomingbarrel racer- all he said was that we hope she doesnt get a bone infection. Thats his main concern at the moment.

@ flamin10- thank you for that video!! It will keep my hopes up with her!!

@ rocking- that is what we are worried about.

@ madridpeanut- the damage was significant in that area but he did not mention the nerve so she must have been doing something with her leg to make him think the nerve was okay. I will ask tomorrow when we go for a recheck.

I might ask for radiographs as well. However she is using her leg extremely well. Most of the time she shows little lameness when moving. She is a tough girl. Thank y'all for your help!!

Recheck went good today..vet said she is moving remarkably well considering the extent of the injury, recheck next week to remove sutures and begin long slow process of healing. Vet also said we wont know how her performance will be affected for another 2 months when I can start working her. We hope they got all the bone fragments out of the wound so it won't cause an infection down the road. Thank you all for your prayers! We need them! I will keep y'all updated randomly!!
