| Hello! Those of you who have used sucralfate for ulcers, can you give me some tips and advice? I've been treating my chronic case with omeprazole but it was suggested to add support for hind gut issues. My vet agrees with the suggestion but didn't give a whole lot of clear cut answers. I'm reading things that say to dose an hour before feeding something like omep and I'm reading things that say to do it after. -- Does any one have any insight? I'll be doing this twice a day. Anyone have suggestions on how to feed it? Drop 10 pills in a syringe and fill with water? I have no idea... Thanks! |

Location: Illinois | The omeprazole paste I get that my vet makes is omeprazole/sucralfate mix. It works better with my horse than the others I tried and a 28 day treatment is only $230 so I'm glad it works well for mine. You could try adding Gastro-Plex pellets from MVP, it's got hind gut support in it now. It's kept mine's ulcers away for a few years now and I was previously treating around 4 times a year. I still keep the paste on hand for when I have to give medications like bute or previcox just to be safe. But otherwise it's been the only thing thats worked for me. |

Location: TN | Sucralfate (for me) seems to work better if you give 30 minutes to an hr before you feed bc it coats the stomach while the omeprazole is treating the ulcers. Giving it a little while before feeding gives it a chance to get the stomach coated before they eat. The combination did well for mine. |

Sucralfate will treat/heal an active ulcer but will do nothing to prevent ulcers.
And it does not "coat" the stomach
“Sucralfate, a complex of aluminum and sugar, adheres to ulcers to COAT and protect the site of ulcers. “ This is was quoted on Succeed’s page in an article about different commonly used ulcer treatments. https://www.succeed-equine.com/succeed-blog/2011/01/21/your-horse-ulcer-free-pt-5-equine-ulcer-treatments/ I’ve also been advised by 3 different vets over the last year that sucralfate is used to ‘coat’ the ulcer area. |

| At the clinic I work at, we put the sucralfate in an oral syringe and pull up water. It "melts" really quickly and is easy to give this way. |
