I go to some barrel races here and there (overnight once in awhile) and also go camping some. I just want a smaller rig and need to decide whether to go with a camper and bumper pull trailer or a small weekender LQ trailer.
What are the pros and cons of each?
Any advice?
I would only do a bumper pull if I had no other option at all.
I considered at one time getting one of those truck bed campers and then I priced them out and went NOPE. Plus, finding one made for a 6 foot bed was like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
Pros - BP/Camper - You can always not pull with the camper if not staying. Smaller trailer.
Cons - BP/Camper - motorhomes typically have lousy gas mileage and I'm not real sure today's little motor homes are really rated for a horse trailer. Parking/backing is more difficult due to wheelbase. Extra parking for the motorhome, instead of just pulling truck into garage. Trailer is typically outside or has a spot anyways. Finding an in-bed truck camper is difficult these days.
Pros - GN - Everything is in one spot. Extra space when horses aren't in trailer with a walk-thru door. I like hauling a GN better than BP, weight it distributed better IMO.
Cons - fairly long, depending on shortwall and how many horses. Funny looks pulling horse trailer into a reg. campground. (lol) Have to get a truck big enough to stop a fully loaded GN.
I really don’t like bumper pulls. It’s a personal preference, but I just don’t like the way they pull and personally, even after owning several, I still suck at backing them.
Depending on your truck size to handling the rig you plan on going with. Saftey is the first factor.
take into account your state regulations in GVWR. ( truck + trailer ) if you are over the limit that can throw you into needing a CDL driver license.
I love my GN with LQ's but it's getting hard for me to climb in and out of the back of my truck to hook and unhook. There is no comparison how it pulls versus a camper and bumper pull.
I’ve done both. Started with truck camper and bumper pull. Now have living quarters. Would never go back. You can take the living quarters camping. I found the truck camper a pain to put on and take off and if you decided to unhook and go to a store restaurant etc you’d have to get truck camper in haul mode (put away anything that might move around). Plus bumper pulls do not haul as nice as a gooseneck. I love my living quarters.
We do have both - the SO has his BP because he doesn't want a GN hitch in the bed of his truck. We use it (3H) for local stuff for the most part and my LQ GN for other hauls & camping (camping besides with the horses too). We also have enough trailer spaces between the 2 to get everyone out in one trip if the **** forest fires are close & we have to evacuate - that was a requirement in my opinion if he was getting more horses. I do prefer hauling a GN - have had campers & BP in the past & still just prefer hauling a GN, LQ or not.
