Today is
One of my horses has started getting a sore on one of his hocks. He has had them in the past, but I noticed they went away after he had his hocks done. Of course the injections were in early spring when the ground was softer, but now that things are dryer he's got one again. He lays down to sleep pretty much every night... outside in his small pasture.
I am wondering if anyone else has noticed if true sore hocks correlate with hock sores. Or might it just be coincidence with the time of year and softness of the ground he lays down on?
I'm going to do the gorrila tape method to protect the sore and will of course keep an eye out for other true signs of sore hocks.
Mine sleeps in a stall every night and I did not notice a correlation with his hock injections.
In case this helps you - the only way I was able to stop the sores was to put tall hind shipping boots on him every night.
I’m about to move to a farm with no barn - I don’t know what I’ll do then!

Thanks for the tip! If I can't get them to heal up with the tape, I will sure give the shipping boots a try. Great suggestion! Thanks!
Yep. Anytime my gelding got hock sores it was time for injections.
They flop their hocks on the ground as they lay down ..
They drag one of their hocks when getting up ..
Use google images ... Horses getting up ... which one is your horse ..
Mine get them worse in the summer. The one that is most noticable has never had his hocks injected. He is 21
My gelding has a sore on one of his hocks and it has been there on and off for the past few months. They are turned out all the time with a run in so Id imagine it was from laying on hard ground. He did recently go the the vet and have his hocks injected as well. The sore is still there but its pretty dry looking and managable.

I'd be interested in knowing if you think the hock sore is healing up since you had him injected.
Thanks!
Its been two weeks and its still there as of now, its not bad and scabbed up at the moment
Can someone explain the gorilla tape method?
Brother Dave has a hock sore that is on his right hock. it seems to really hurt him.. he doesn't like it when I doctor it..
I've on run cold water on it and have tried different types of medication.
I have a hard time keeping a hock boot on him..it slides down.. don't like it on too tight..guess that's why.??
Every evening I put a small piece of gorrilla tape over the hock sore. It ads just enough protection for the sore underneath to help it heal. It just sticks to the hair and stays on better than a hock boot or hock protector thingy does. Getting them to heal takes forever!

It'll be worth a try..
Thank you!
Try putting some Desitin on those areas everyday. When he lays down it may just be enough to reduce the friction of the ground rubbing the bony area. It worked for my horse. A lot of horses that live in stalls get them. It’s from them laying down and their hock contacting the rubber mat when the shavings move. I see it all the time in my profession with show horses. It has nothing to do with needing hocks done
