Long story short - horse pulled up lame the second day of a 3 day show May 2019, presented with knee swelling and didn't get better after a few days. Took him in and took rads, figured he banged it in the stall, injected it, and immediately better. Pulled up very lame a week later and had also ripped a shoe off his hind so we figured he reinjured and gave him a couple months off. Took in for a recheck - vet said he was totally sound, don't worry about the knee bulge or the small bone spur, the swelling on his knee will come and go but he assured me it will not affect him (this is a world renowned vet, not your backyard cow vet.) Ran him August to November with no issues.

Fast forward to our 36 hour ride to Arizona from Wisconsin and he steps off the trailer lame. Took him in and found these rads. I was horrified to say the least. Anyone have experience with something like this? The progression is scary and sickeningly fast. I baby the crap out of that knee - cold therapy after every ride, laser therapy, injectable and feed through joint supps, etc. Not much I can do for bone. He's only 8 and my only horse so looking at long term. Obvioulsly have consulted the vet so looking for personal experiences. We injected again with noltrex and he's sound, just haven't rode him yet. 

I had a well known lameness vet to feed  feed lime.  1/4 cup

a day.  It dissolved a spur on a horse I had.  It’s the lime they put in feed.  So you will have get it at a feed mill

My 12 yr old mare has almost the exact same radiograph. She was lame, injected knees, was sound for a few months, then lame and fluid filled swelling on her knees, mostly left. I retired her and bred her last year. My vet contacted a surgical center who said those knee bone spurs are not very operable....once ground off, they tend to regrow with vengeance. I was beyond devistated. The noltrex may reduce the rubbing, and provide a thicker lubricaiton, but I don't believe it is going to fix your problem long term. I still rode my mare very lightly after the diagnosis, no more barrels etc, and her knee would swell up horribly. I realized I had to stop. Her swelling is permenant now, as far as I can tell.... I'm so sorry. That's a heartbreaking diagnosis. Here's my mare's x-ray.

Have you tried Osphos? One of my vets has been using it for bone spurs on some horses, he says he's getting good results from it. Mine has spurs all over his knees but they don't seem to bother him. That's crazy how much changes theres been in just one year. It's possible standing for that long of time angered it even more than usual, kinda how arthritis horses need to move constatly or it gets worse. I'd talk to someone about trying Osphsos on it if it were me. 

I 2nd this. My stud injured his foot causing a bone issue, not sure if it is exactly a spur. 1 shot of Osphos and he's been sound and back to ranching.  We'll get new xrays late summer to see if the xrays look any different and if he needs another shot.

I can certainly try it. He's sound right now with the recent injection, going to try to run him soon so we'll see if he holds up. Already preparing for the worst.

My mare has similar radiographs of both knees and she is only 5. My vet also suggested Osphos. I think it helped some but I still made the decision to retire her.
