I have a 6 week old Filly that Tuesday night she had swelling in her face and couldn't turn to the right.

After a trip to the vet we found a fracture of her C5 in the neck. The vet has her on dex & banamine. Right now it's a wait and see game. The vets couldn't give me a long term prognosis. Hopefully she'll heal and have some mobility to the right.

I have no idea what she could of done to herself, there isn't a mark on her.

Has anyone dealt with something like this? What was the outcome? Did you do any treatments or just give it time and see.

I finally got a filly out of a mare I absolutely loved that had her career cut short and now who knows if she'll be useable. I'm feeling pretty defeated right now.

Stem Cell may be an alternative, but that can be a time sensitive treatment. Talk to your vet about it.

Hoping for a good outcome. I wonder if she ran and did a somersault. I have seen them do that and usually shake it off but I knew someone that had their baby break their neck similar to yours. Not sure how it turned out, same wait and see I think. I would worry about compression later on that would cause wobblers. Prayers for your baby. My favorite mare had a perfect baby with a hind pastern injury the day he was born. It's not looking promising but it quit dislocating on it's own. So baby steps. The good news is their bones can change and adapt better at this age...or at least that is what I am always told.

I'm wondering if that's what happened, she got running and fell or flipped. I'd forgotten until you mentioned it the vet did say it could lead to wobblers. I'm hoping where she is young and healthy maybe she'll come out of it and not have too many lasting issues with it.

I'm so sad, I'm ready to throw in the towel, if I hadn't just picked up my 6 year old from the trainer I'd turn them all out and take a break, but that feels like a waste of money.

I hope your baby comes out of his injury, little things are so fragile and they work their way right into our hearts!

We have a gelding with fractures in C4 and C5. It looks like at some point, his head was tied around and he flipped thus causing the fractures. We get in neck injected via ultrasound. He gets done about every 18 months. The vet said if we keep on top of it, he should have a long career. Ignore it and it will eventually turn into full blown wobblers. Having lost one to wobblers, I really don't want to go through that situation again. It sucked.

There was a girl in our area who bought a mare as a prospect to start running. Mare couldn't/wouldn't rotate her head and turn like they should. Got her x rayed and she had a fused her C1/C2 vertebrae. She was able to train her to turn (and efficiently at that) even though she had to turn like she had a 2x4 on either side of her neck. It is possible so don't lose hope.

Thank you for commenting! I didn't think about injections I'll ask the vet when we go back in July. She's my perfect filly, the one you dream of, so I'm hoping she'll heal up and be useable.

They talked about doing the basket surgery but decided she wasn't a canidate for that and her bones are too soft for a plate.

She's got her spunk back and can turn to the right now so I'm not feeling near as hopeless as I did last week.

If she were mine, I would keep a close eye on it for as long as I had her. I'd plan on doing yearly xrays to keep an eye on arthritis forming. With Sidekick, it took about 7 years from the time of the original injury until he started showing small neurological signs. Had I known then what I know now, I probably could have saved him. Keeping an eye on it and maintaining it will be key in having a positive outcome.

I think she's a lifer. I'm hoping she'll at least be ridable. I'd like to see how she is before just throwing her to be a broodmare.

I have no issue with yearly x-rays or injections. If it helps keep her healthy and feeling as good as possible.
