| At the barn I board at, everyone gets safe choice original grain. While it is not what I want to feed, it is what it is for now. I wanted to drop his grain down, so I started feeding alfalfa pellets and rice bran meal. The barn manager had him on a lot of grain, which I didn't like. So we cut it in half, and now he is losing weight. How much alfalfa pellets should he be getting twice a day in his feed? I weighed it today, and he gets 1.725lbs of safe choice grain a day, and 1.475 lbs of alfalfa pellets a day. She always gives him a lot of safe choice to keep his weight up, but since I've cut his grain in half he is less spooky. So I really don't want to up the grain. If anything I would like to up the alfalfa pellets

So if you stop the grain, just do the alfalfa pellets twice a day and maybe try 1.5 lbs twice a day if that works. Adjust as needed. |

I'm not really ready to Take him off grain completely yet. But I have lowered it considerably. If I add an extra scoop of alfalfa pellets morning and night, will that be too much? That would be 2 1/2 pounds of alfalfa pellets a day. I could also up the rice bran meal to one cup morning and one cup at night as well. |

Location: Where you need a paddle... Oregon! | Keep upping it until you like how he looks and address forage, too. Every horse is different based on age, weight, breeding, activity level. I just feed whatever keeps my horses looking the way I like and I don't worry about how many pounds that is or isn't. But I also feed free-choice alfalfa and grass hay. |

Location: Duvall, WA | My vet told me my horse should be getting 18 lbs of roughage a day. If you would like him to get a good portion of that from pellets, you need to be feeding way more. I fed my three year old who needed weight 18 lbs of soaked alfalfa cubes, 1 1/2 lbs of Renew Gold and free choice orchard grass a day for a year, she looks fabulous. I just cut it back to 12 lbs a day soaked cubes. |
