Unless you plan to breed or show the mare down the road it doesn't matter. 99% of mares shouldn't be bred anyway. If you like her I'd go for it.
I agree with the "Can't Ride The Papers".. I have a 31 y/o mare i have owed for 24 years. I bought her as a grade 1D mare. I have never looked back. We knew how she was bred and she fit me at the time... She has carried me and several others to the winner's window... I do regret not flushing her and getting me a baby.. She is the Sunshine in my world everyday... With all that said, if she works for you and is healthy, GO FOR IT!!! Best of luck.... Have a Blessed Day!!!!

If you know who her sire and dam are, you can get a DNA test to verify. While it isn't registration papers, at least you will have proof that she is what is being claimed if you decide to sell her down the road.
I honestly loathe the statement, "You can't ride papers". If that were actually true, we wouldn't have associations to track bloodlines, all stallions would have the same stud fee no matter how they produced and every horse would be priced the same.
I don't think they meant it like that...the mare I have is DNA tested but I wasn't sure if I was going to get the papers since the OG owner never signed but I may be getting them after all. Certain bloodlines are definitely worth more, but I am the type of person where I don't pick a horse mainly on that. My gelding is definitely not barrel bred but mainly halter and racing and he has been wonderful for me. I know some people that have barrel bred horses and they didn't work out. Obviously just a matter of opinion...I certainly do not have money for top bloodlines though. The mare I bought is not barrel bred either...cow horse, some halter, and racing.
I think she meant that papers only matter to the people who care about the papers. I haven't owned a papered horse in several years but I'm nobody.. If I liked a horse, got along well with it and it fit my style and budget ... papers would just be a bonus at that point, but lack of them wouldn't be a deal breaker. I don't purchase much anything with the idea of reselling anyway, but that's just me
