I own a charmayne james grasshopper bit for my finished horse, I have been using it on my young horse I'm training and want to get another one but of course they aren't being made anymore.
-I'm wondering if anybody has one for sale?
- Anyone know where to find any that are still around?
- Bits that are VERY VERY similar so I wouldn't make a big change for my young horse?
My horse is softish mouth but is very powerful and bends nicely at the poll for me and stops on a dime for this bit, if any of you could help me out tha'd be great!!
-Thanks!!

There is a bit auction group on facebook. Maybe I can add you if you have FB, or see if any of your friends can. They have auctioned some off recently.

With a bit that seems popular, does anyone know why they quit making it?

On the bit auction site, there is also someone that has been making knock off grasshopper bits. They are black, and built the same for a fraction of the price. People have gave feedback that they are quite happy with them. It is K&? bits that makes them. I think there is one on there right now.

I just seen it, the center piece looks quite different than the regular grasshopper bit that I have. Do you know if it works similar? heres the one I have

I have both an original CJ hopper AND the knockoff hopper made by Wendy Horton (owner of the company that makes them, I forget the name but it starts with a K).

In my opinion the knockoff works brilliantly. The center piece is more of a sphere instead of the bean shape of the CJ, but the weight is there for the function. I bought the knockoff to replace an original that broke, because BOTH my horses run in it. I can switch it between them and neither of them notice. Wendy Horton does awesome work.

And also..... The bit sites on FB - you are going to pay A LOT. There is such a hype about them and people get into a craY frenzy. They've gone for $200+ in the past. I would recommend trying the bit by KLU Bits (I remembered the name! Yay!)

I have an original as well.. paid $39 for it brand new when they came out lol... It hangs in my trailer as my trail riding bit. I dont see why the KLU bit wouldnt work very similar. I would be willing to spend the $50 to try it instead of the $200 that people are paying for the originals...

Wouldnt that be interesting if they started making them again for regular price lol

One more question, do I just look up Klu bit and thats the exact one I get or is there a specific place/name for it? I don't want to mess up and have my hands full with bits I don't need lol

I think they have a website, although I am not sure what it is. You should be able to ask for the 7" grasshopper replica and get what you are wanting.

I am also looking for a Grasshopper bit, so hard to find. I will not pay $150+ for one!! I got quoted $125 for a KLU bit, too much for me also since I have not tried one.  I am patiently waiting for Professionals Choice to start making them again or to find one that doesn't cost over $100.  I am borrowing one from a friend and really like it, sure wish I could find one to buy.

The reason KLU is so expensive is because hers are all HANDMADE and the Grasshopper replica is pretty labor intensive. They make all their bits by hand from start to finish. $125 is still cheaper than $200 though. And it works just as great.

Another solution - my husband did this for me:

I bought the 9 inch grasshopper and he cut and inch from each end of the bit and then welded it back together. BOOM! 7 inch grasshopper. I know you can get the 9 inch easily, and if you or a friend or family member are handy with a band saw, grinder and a MIG welder - go for it. I don't recommend using just a regular welder though - it makes a lot of extra splatter that will need ground off. Wire feed is the way to go.
