Currently my husband and I have a couple different vehicles. We also have one 2 1/2 year old son and are expecting another in February 2014. I intend on riding after the next one is born, so I want a reliable pickup to pull our trailer with. My current pickup is a 2006 Dodge 2500 with 4 doors. He drives 40 miles one way to work and has a 2004 Chevy Malibu with over 150,000 miles on it. It's got issues with the theft deterant system, and sometimes can be finicky to start. My pickup is in good working order and I feel its reilable. I have NO problem driving my pickup to and from work (which I already do).

He was complaining that there's going to be no room in the pickup with two car seats, which I understand. He's go the idea that we should trade my pickup in on an SUV and just use his old 1998 Dodge 2500 single cab (with some issues) when ever we need to pull the trailer. I'm not above driving the old pickup, but what happens if I need to take one or both of the kids with me and have to pull a trailer? It would be impossible to get everyone and their seats in that pickup..

I hate to start another set of payments on a vehicle, especially with a new baby and the added daycare costs. Anybody have any good suggestions on an SUV?

I would keep the 2006, the Malibu, and then get an SUV for your daily driver.

We have an Escape that has 299k miles on it. I love it, and has plenty of room. I'm 6 foot and fit comfortably in the backseat. I'll own another one if I had to choose.

You can pull a two horse bumper pull with an SUV but I recommend you get a 4X4. Some of the newer model 4X4's that are V8s get awesome gas milage. Maybeyour husbands car can be traded in for another car that is full size and you keep the truck!

I have a truck I bought used for work and pulling the trailer, and then I have a kidhaulergroceryandhorsefeedgetter. It's a 2009 Chevy Traverse and I love that thing.  That's what we use when traveling as a family too.

Don't flatter yourself. I can't help it if you're a pot stirrer with no sense of humor. Fly away now. Makes no difference to me which ride you choose to straddle.

How often do yo pull the trailer? Honestly for me, having a reliable truck for towing is very important. It is really the last way you want to be stranded is with horses.

I think this is a good idea, there's plenty of SUV choices that get just as good if not better MPGs than a Malibu.

I'm afraid as many miles as the Malibu has on it they won't give us anything for it. I'd be more inclined to keep it and let him drive the wheels off of it and then let him drive the SUV to work and back. It's only 10 miles for me to get to work so it's not like I'm putting a million miles on my pickup either. When I haul the trailer it's a couple times a month to get to barrel races; and we have cattle so there's added hauling occasionally there, plus hay hauling. Most of the barrel races are an hour or two from here.

We did chat some about what we wanted to do some last night, but I think he had sticker shock by some of the cars I was showing him. The Malibu is paid off and my pickup is about half paid for. I've been looking at the Chevy Traverse and their Equinox. He doesn't think we need much other room besides for us and the kids, but if we're going to spend the money, I'd like to have room for at least one or two other passengers besides the boys.

I would sell the Malibu outright and get a SUV. We have a Chevy Trailblazer that gets really good gas mileage, plus has tons of room. My Nissan Pathfinder was an awesome SUV too.

I'd want to keep the Malibu if I needed a cheap vehicle to put miles on.
I have 5 kids and I have a 07 impala cop car I got cheap to put the miles on driving to work or when I'm driving and not having to haul around most of my family. I also have a 06 megacab pickup for pulling my trailer and a car seat for my 1 year old and my other 4 kids can ride in it with plenty of room. The megacab has room even for the ginormous rear facing car seats the kids have to be in to 2. For hauling everyone around we have a suburban but if I didn't have so many kids a smaller SUV would work.

Sell the malibu private instead of trade in.  Get a SUV or even a *gasp* mini-van with the stow and go seating, you would be amazed at what you can all fit into one of those babies.  Keep your pickup and possibly sell the other pickup if you need to.

Seriously?!?!

Your obviously new here, no need to get crap stirred up or get butthurt over a silly comment. If you don't have a sense of humor, than stay off the board.

When other members are rude or snotty to me, I dont take it personal because I don't know them. And I sure as heck don't make rude comments like that!

I was doing some browsing at lunchtime, which is better for an SUV? All-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. We live on a dirt road and my husband has to drive during crappy weather at times. The Malibu is FWD, and seems to handle the mud and muck, I just wonder if an SUV with FWD could handle the same?
