Has anyone spayed a mare before? Which procedure did you do?
I am planning to have my mare spayed in December, just still debating between the colpotomy
(vaginal approach
) and the laparascopic approach. There is a price difference between the two surgeries, but the recovery time is about the same with both.
Also just wanted to hear any real life outcomes from having it done.

I personally have never had one spayed. I have heard a lot of horror stories about mares bleeding out from spay by colpotomy in the old days.

Not sure what your reasons may be but have you tried the marble or implant or regumate? In school we heard all the horror stories about mares who act bad permanently after getting spayed...some of them will act like studs

We had one done about 10 years ago. They went in thru a decent sized incission
(sp
) in her flank. Was the best thing that ever happened to her!! TOTALLY worth it.

I have had 2 mares spayed. Best thing I could have done for BOTH mares after NOTHING else helped their pain issues due to multiple retained follicles in both mares.
The one 19 years ago we did a mid-line spay
(through the belly
). They wanted to be able to search for any granulosa tumors she might be hiding.
The second mare was 2 years ago, and did the laparoscopic spay though the flank. Unfortunately one incision
(which they originally had to enlarge to get the very large ovary out
), abcessed with what turned out to be MRSA.......I just have the best of luck.......sigh
To be specific, these were both ovarectomies as opposed to a complete hysterectomy.

I don't understand besides a real medical reason why would you get your mare spayed?? Just curious ... :

Yeah my vet warned me sometimes spaying can make their behavior issues worse since they won't make progesterone anymore. That makes me a little worried.....
But based on her symptoms all three vets I consulted
(one surgeon, one repro vet and my general practice equine vet
) thought she was actually a good candidate for spaying.
I was going to try the marble but have actually been advised against it by the three equine vets I consulted about her. I guess they don't see good outcomes with it much?? I don't want to do Regumate long term - its expensive and a pain to handle.
The repro vet I talked to suggested oxytocin as an alternative to Regumate. But she said we would have to wait until spring and start it once she starts cycling again in the spring. The recommended time to spay is in the winter so I hate to let this winter pass and try that in the spring and it doesn't work. Then she has to go another year with pain. I probably could get her spayed in the summer, but when I started discussing this option with the vets this summer they all said to wait until winter.
