Location: Indiana | I need some advice! I have a limited window of time with this and i cant make a solid decision, I have two prospects right now, and to be able to afford to send either one to the trainers to be finished I need to sell the other one. One is a 3 yo mare that is very well bred, she's all cuttin bred (Delta Flyer granddaughter on top) . She absolutely floats when she trots and has a ton of athletic ability but she is not broke. The gelding is an off the track Quarter Horse that is also very well bred (First down dash, Zevi, special Effort, and jaguar rocket all on his papers). He is broke and ready to be finished. He is shockingly going to be more of a push style horse as I can already tell. He will get it and really RUN when asked but he doesn't have much heart the way my little Leo gelding does. The mare i can see a LOT of fire in and i can already see her being a free runner type when she gets going. She's about 14.1 hands and he is about 16 hands. Totally opposite horses. I kind of see the bay mare being more athletic, but the gelding is also very athletic and intelligent and he is already broke and ready for the pattern. One upside to the gelding is hes already broke and further along, the downside is hes been on the track and he will have much more wear and tear on his joints than the mare. I dont mind her not being broke as a 3yo. Which should I keep and which should I sell in your opinions? I know a trainer that I want to send the one I keep to and she needs consignment horses for her website, she offered to take the one I want to sell and train it and sell it and I tell her how much money I want out of it in my pocket and whatever extra she gets she keeps for the training and expenses of when she had it. Then with that money I could send the one I keep to her for however many days I can afford... Opinions? |

Location: NC | It sounds like to me you see more potential in the Mare. What style do you like more Push or Free Running?? Do you like big or little horses? Do you like mares or geldings more? It seems like you could get more for the gelding now since he is broke, which is a plus. Like you said gelding may have more wear adn tear then mare since he was on track.
From what you have said I would say keep mare sell gelding....
But it also depends on what type of horse you prefer... |

I really prefer a Free runner over a push style horse. I dont really have a height preference or a gender preference..One thing someone mention on my facebook is that "all the Dash for Cash horses she has ridden were typically pretty laid back and calm until you put them through the pattern and they would just turn on and give you a lot og heart"..The experience i had with DFC horses was they were pretty hot in general and did give a lot of heart on the pattern. I could see him maybe stepping it up once he gets going, but im just doing slow work away from the pattern with him so its hard to say.. SUCH a hard decision!! |

Location: My own little world :) | To me it seems like you are leaning towards the mare ;) In my experience it seems like mares will try harder for you....like they have more heart or something. All the geldings I had did what you asked of them but they didn't seem like they really enjoyed it. But that is just my own experiences...it could be different for everyone.
One other thing you could do is put them both up for sale for a nice price and then keep whatever doesn't sell first. Just a thought. |

Location: My Own Little World | OK, here's my take: Send them BOTH to the trainer and put BOTH up on consignment. The one that sells first, well, sells first. But if along the way, you see one of them beginning to shine, take that one off the market |

I know I had a ton of interest in my driftwood gelding who had never even seen the pattern yet LOL. People like BIG geldings, they sell faster from what I've seen |

I've heard this too
Geldings sell easier and for more money, plus it seems like you like the mare better. |

| Based off of their papers and your pictures I personally would keep the gelding...but only after a thorough vet exam. I like his papers and have rode several with similar pedigrees and all were 1d/2d type horses. I feel the gelding is less of a gamble if he is clean physically. The only negative he has to me is being off the track and my record with those is that most of them have some sort of physical issue typically....I would have him checked make sure everything looks great and keep him. I like race breds more though and also I would want to keep the one who is broke and ready to start instead of gambling on liking the mare once she is broke. I have had a lot I liked from the ground but once on their back it was a different story |

The gelding seems more marketable at this point. I like the mares 1/2 papers..Doc bar....some peppy san.....
Do you want to be hauling now, or does it matter? |
