Location: Northern CA | The time has come to bite the bullet, and buy a new truck. I have always been a strictly diesel person, but I am wondering with the new trucks now adays, has anyone had good luck hauling with a gas pick up? I pull a light gooseneck, stock combo, and usually never more than 4 horses. My hubby has a diesel if heavier pulling is needed. Is there much of a difference in..... 1. purchase price 2. pulling capabilities 3. fuel mileage 4. upkeep Thanks! |

4. Yes
Does that help? :) Plan on spending another 7-10k for a diesel engine, they do pull harder and better than a gas pickup (it's what diesel engines do best), the mileage is generally better than a gas but diesel is more expensive making it almost a wash, diesel engines are definitely costlier for upkeep - even basic stuff like oil changes, 10 qts. instead of 5, tires - should use at least 10-ply on a diesel cause they are heavier. Having said all that - do what is best for you. I use mine for my daily commuter - practical? No. But I like it. |

Location: North Central Iowa Land of white frozen grass | Let's see. Gas is $3.06 a gallon / 8 mpg = $.38 per mile cost Diesel is $3.78 a gallon / 12 mpg = $.31 per mile. Your saving $.07 per mile You pay $10,000 more for the diesel. $10,000 / $.07 = 142,857 loaded pulling miles to recoupe your money just on fuel. If you have one diesel pickup now I would just buy a gas for the second truck. I have an 02 and 06 F-350 diesels. I just bought a new F-150 Eco-boost for my daily driver and I sure like each truck for what I need it for. |

Location: Exactly where I am supposed to be | Plan on a Diesel, yes it is more expensive but it is THEE BEST investment you will ever make, especially for hauling....you will save more on gas and they run FOREVER !!! if you take care of them.....I will probably start a war but I would suggest a Dodge first then Ford then Chevy. Just in my opinion, in the extra money you will spend now you will save later. |

Location: Deep South | I switched from a diesel to a gas, I miss the diesel. We only use ours for hauling, we have other vehicles we use for daily driving. Those of you comparing getting a gas truck for daily driving to getting one for pulling, that's apples and oranges.
You'd be shocked how much power you lose. Even though you say you're not pulling a big trailer and only four horses at the most. You'll be able to tell a difference. I'm currently only hauling a three horse bumper pull and can tell a difference.
Diesel does cost more upfront, but will outlast a gas by a long shot.
Higher diesel prices, but they get better fuel mileage.
I'm not that sure about maintenance costs, I don't take care of that! Lol! |

Location: kentucky | We have been tossing around the idea of a gas engine also. We have a diesel now and have had to put a ton of money into it here in the past year. All I know is back in the early 90's we always had a gas chevy truck and we would throw 4, 5 or 6 horses in the metal stock trailer and go ! Never had any problems ! So why is it any different now ? Gas engines have only gotten more efficient, trailers are lighter, ect ...... And my diesel only gets 10 miles a gallon pulling ! |

Location: BFE, Idaho | I have had Ford diesels for the last 23 years, I have had great luck with them. But if you are a weekend warrior, or do not haul alot nor with a heavy rig they will not pay their way.
If you are going on long hauls, lots of miles and big loads. 4 horses or more, or a living quarters trailer then you are going to love the power. But it will never be cost effective. Just very power effective. Everything from oil changes to whatevers cost more for a diesel.
I only haul rarely now and with one or two horses, just sold my big F350 4 door dually, was a great truck but total waste of upkeep for me now. I am looking for a gas Excursion to pull my two horse. I am not looking at milage, but what I need in one vehicle to meet all my needs. |

| we have a Dodge gas truck and a Ford diesel. I just bought the gas truck and I hate it. It gets 12.7mpg and my husband's giant F350 dually gets 15-17 towing a trailer. My Dodge feels like it's plastic and will break with my 3 horse BP and my two fat-butt mares and my yearling. I DON'T even want to know what it will haul like with the huge gelding in it with the mares, instead. The one thing I do like, though is that what costs him $1600 only costs me $400. Otherwise I would get rid of it...I don't think it's a Dodge vs. Ford thing, either. But more of a diesel cost vs. gasoline power cost.
And whoever said gas was $3.07 and diesel $3.76...WHERE DO YOU LIVE? I NEED TO MOVE THERE!! LOL |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | We pull with a gas engine - 3/4 ton heavy duty dually. We have less than $10k in it.
During show season we'll haul 2-3x a month usually no more than 2 hours away. I'll haul 3-4 in a 16' aluminum stock trailer. I also haul out a few times a month to the farrier and to practice.
The furtherst we've pulled was to Ft. Smith (10 hours) and we pulled a 1980's Steel living quarters with 4 big horses. It made the trip to Jackson this past weekend as well pulling that same trailer and load -- it averages around 7 miles per gallon pulling that trailer.
The reason we bought a gas engine is that it's a lot cheaper to work on. Unless you buy new, there's going to be things that will need to be worked on here and there and when you start working on diesals it gets very expensive very quick. Plus, it's easier for most people to work on a gas engine anyhow.

It hauls really nice and we don't go the distance to make a diesel worth it for us. The motor handles everything we do very well and has pulled some very heavy equipment (for my husband's business) as needed with no issues. We are both pretty impressed with it's power.
Hauling, I usually get 10-12 mpg. It's about the same driving...but if you do lots of highway miles, you can get up to 15-16 with if using the cruise. I don't have any complaints with it so far. |

Location: Up and over to the right | I pull an aluminium 3H bp with a '13 F250 diesel and I'll never go back to gas.
The only downside is fuel, since it is over $4.35 by me at the moment. But I'll that over my guzzling Silverado any day. |

What kind of mpg's are you getting with the diesel? And how do you like the new motor thus far? |
