Location: Central TX | Got to thinking the other day...it seems like the rodeo world is largely geldings..Of course there are Stingrays, marthas, movins etc. But i feel like the top rodeo horses are geldings...basically..what im getting at is..Do you guys think that geldings have an advantage over mares? maybe more competitive? maybe more able to handle the stress of the road? maybe attitude contributes to that? less princessy? Im not trying IN ANY WAY to strike any chords with anyone..just something I really got to thinking about the other day when looking at the top 25 in the world! would be very interesting to hear your opinions on what you think has a competitive advantage? mares or geldings? I hope this doesnt sound like a stupid topic and a valid question.

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | I don't think performance against performance a gelding has an advantage over a mare. But, I think generally speaking, they do have a little bit of an advantage in that geldings tend to be more consistent day in and day out. That's not to say that a mare can't be consistent -- I've had 1 that was very consistent-- they're all individuals. But the majority of mares out there do hormonal fluctuations that have an impact on how they work, how they feel, and their attitudes. It's harder to run hard when you're fighting that kind of thing.
Generally speaking, I think too that a lot of mares do require more attention than most geldings. They expect a little more out of a rider in regards to earning respect and bonding.
If you're hauling hard day in and day out, it's a little easier if you have a horse that's consistent and doesn't require as much effort/upkeep. | |

Location: Red Raiderland | My personal experience is that geldings are generally easier to haul. I have had mares and have a mare now that has major hormonal flucuations and it's something I always have to deal with. I am really not particular on gelding or mare but I think mares take more attention. Geldings are pretty much always the same horse, day in and day out.
I will be hauling two mares this spring so there will be LOTS of hormones flying...me included!
I think the old saying applies: Tell a gelding. Ask a stallion and discuss it with a mare.

I totally agree. A lot of backup horses might be mare's and vice versa. Kaley Bass' backup is a mare. And Pamela Capper runs a mare, Sheza Smooth Flight. | |

Location: Pacific Northwest | I don't think any gender has an advantage. I know really fast mares and really fast geldings. Stereotypically mares tend to be more inconsistent personality wise (they remind me of women, honestly) but I have a gelding that I'm pretty sure should have been born a mare. He's inconsistent, holds grudges, etc etc. Then I have a mare that I don't even know if she comes into heat, she's so laid back and never offers attitude to humans OR horses.
The one thing I will say about mares though is that once they click with you, they CLICK with you, and they will do whatever you ask and give 110%. Not saying geldings won't do the same; I LOVE my geldings, my horse TJ I think has the most heart of any horse I've ever met. But he's such a good boy that he'd give 100% no matter who ran him. Mares can be trickier, usually if they don't like you they don't try as hard. | |

and don't forget Michelle's backup is a mare who can run with the best of them and won the Congress Barrel Sweeps.
Jane Melby qualified on a mare her first time to the NFR.
Brittany won a ton of money on Cosmo and an AQHA Reserve World Championship
There have been some years where mares dominated. Don't forget Dolly, Mulberry Canyon Moon and Firewater Fiesta. and of course JL Dash Ta Heavens dam was a standout performer. Pretty sure Nikki Steffes and Kelli Tolbert were riding mares last year? | |

| From my experience and from what ive heard, many say mares have more grit and heart and geldings give you consistency. Obviously there are exceptions to every rule but generally speaking...
I dont have a gender preference. I grre up riding mares who were the exception and were consistent on top of being gritty with more heart than most and I now ride a gelding who has a lot of try and hes getting more and more consistent as the years go. | |

Location: California | Geldings have been much more common until recent years, at least at the NFR. A while ago I also wondered the same things, along with how each were bred, etc. So when I got hurt a few years ago I had some extra time on my hands and broke out all my old NFR tapes from 1991-present and logged every horse and rider that has run through the gate as best I can with the help of the interenet, my early travels and recognizing the horses, BHN, etc. And here's what I can tell you from my "research" -
I have accounted for 241 horses from 1991-2012 and of those, 161 were geldings, 70 were mares, and 10 were stallions.

Location: Kansas | OK here's a totally random spin off thought - If you're borrowing a horse, is it easier to do on a gelding than on a mare? I guess my thought is that most of the horses I've heard of being borrowed for the NFR are geldings. Is it a quicker getting with them process than with a mare? Just thought I'd throw it out there.
In the amatuer associations I belong to, it seems to be a mix of mares and geldings at the top. I think this year at URA Finals, the top 15 barrel racers had used about a 50/50 split of mares & geldings. going down the final standings list - gelding, mare, geldings, mares, geldings, mare, geldings, mare, geldings, geldings, mare and gelding, geldings, geldings, gelding I think, and gelding I think. That would be 17 geldings and 7 mares that I can recall those top 15 girls running during the year - they certainly could have run others that I don't know about. I know a couple girls ran some horses I didn't know due to injuries. The 2010, 2011 and 2012 URA Champions all rode mares and the 2013 champ rides a gelding.

That is a good question... I have noticed more borrowed geldings too now that you say that.

A while ago I also wondered the same things, along with how each were bred, etc. So when I got hurt a few years ago I had some extra time on my hands and broke out all my old NFR tapes from 1991-present and logged every horse and rider that has run through the gate as best I can with the help of the interenet, my early travels and recognizing the horses, BHN, etc. And here's what I can tell you from my "research" -
I have accounted for 241 horses from 1991-2012 and of those, 161 were geldings, 70 were mares, and 10 were stallions.
In 2012 there were 23 horses ran during the 10 rounds: 13 geld, 7 mare, 3 stal

My personal experience is that geldings are generally easier to haul. I have had mares and have a mare now that has major hormonal flucuations and it's something I always have to deal with. I am really not particular on gelding or mare but I think mares take more attention. Geldings are pretty much always the same horse, day in and day out.
I will be hauling two mares this spring so there will be LOTS of hormones flying...me included!
I think the old saying applies: Tell a gelding. Ask a stallion and discuss it with a mare.
