I am very interested in futurities and what to know how to get involved. I have a 3 year old filly that I would like to futurity as a 5 year old if she comes along nicely. Can someone tell me the ins and outs of the futurity world, give me some pointers, etc.? I am in the northwest and I'm not sure where all of the futurities are or at least ones that would be most easy for me to attend. I would love to go to Diamonds and Dirt but I don't know if that will happen! Fill me in please!! I appreciate all the input I can get!

I know the VGBRA Barrel Daze futurity is in Walla Walla in April. Other than that I don't know. I am in the same boat. The best thing to do is find someone who has made a futurity horse or who has been in them to tell you what to do. I have a lady at my office who used to run in the futurities and I asked her what to do. She said start hauling, hauling, hauling, and show the youngster the pattern daily but make it a game or they can sull up. She also said add speed slowly or you can scare them...and keep hauling, hauling, hauling- everywhere. Barrel races, county fairs, ropings, dressage shows, Wal-mart, your friend's arena...you get the idea.

If you look at the rules for each futurity it will tell you what the rules are and how to pay in to each one and enter when it's your horse's year.

I am also in the NW and we have a weanling that we hope to one day futurity. I had heard the only thing up here is BRN4D and that you just enter and go. I think for the other one someone mentioned your horse has to be enrolled and paid up but I am not too sure on that. If you find anything else out I would love to know too!

Just train your horse and jump in and enter.  Thats what I did.  I am still paying my dues so to speak.  I am a little fish in a big pond.  Been trying to do it for a while now but have lots more to learn!!  I love the challenge and the best advice I ever got was this....enter and never expect to get anything back they are babies.  And if you do celebrate!!  Not all horses make futurity horses.  Only go as fast as they can handle and find people in your area to help you over come the obstacles!!

Awesome! Thats about what I was planning on doing. I don't really know of lots of people in my area that do it. They more just do club races and whatnot so I will kind of be flying blind. I have a 3 year old mare and a weanling filly that I hope will work out for me but only time will tell!

I have a coming three year old that I want to run in 2015. My advice to my mom was to open a savings account over the next year so if she's ready, I have the money to enter her. Futurities are expensive!!

ugh i bought a good prospect for futurities that was Hawki eligible and she ended up falling at some point and ripped ligaments in her hip. She will never be a running horse just a trail horse now with proper time off. It still makes me sick so i have a broken heart with futurities at the moment i have a new prospect but not with all the hoped credentials of the last. i will do futurities with her if she is REALLY showing promise but im not sure when i will put all my eggs in a basket again with it... i dont have a barn full of horses and only take care of what i can afford.

I am trying to jump in 2014. I just got back to running in 2011 and really want to try futurities. I have one really nice 3 yr old who we have been hauling around since she was 2. She has been doing pretty well I will enter her next week for the first time and see where we are at. I know they are expensive and don't plan to make money at it but I love the competition and the bigger it is the more I love it even if I do get whooped bad. I think this girl has what it takes to be a contender we won't be at the big ones though because my pocket book is small. I have 3 others that hopefully will get in some small fall futurities and one probably won't run until he is 5 in 2015. I am in Montana and there are some smaller futurities around, I had planned to go to Arizona in Jan but can't make it happen this time.

First you have to see if your futurity horse is by a sire that has been nominated and paid up in certain closed futurities. Then check to see if your foal had to be paid into the program so you can enter your foal by him and follow the payment structure for that futurity. (This is the reason you see so many stallion breeding auctions ... the sold breeding is the base for the futurity money and qualifies the stallions get to be eligible to be in the futurity with certain rules babies owner must follow ... $$$$'s paid in etc )

Otherwise you have to find you an open futurity where you can pay your entry fees from a certain time to futurity time by monthly payments on any horse you own per entry rules.

Find you several futurities to learn from the paperwork and different rules each may have on the net ...... .. print off the rules and entry forms for a fake baby and read and fill out just like you were entering ....make you a futurity packet just like you were entering ....>>> 3 BIG NO NO's ....>>>foal nomination fee not paid, late futurity payments and running your horse for money before December of their 3yo year can get you deleted from the futurity ... with no refund.

For the fun of it ... take a trip as a spectator and go see one of the futurities you did the paperwork on with the fake baby ... You will get to see how focused, crazy and dedicated these futurity owners and riders are!!

Reading and knowing the rules from the futurity promoter saves you from a lot of hearsay from other people ... getting them to explain some of the rules from the flyer is a good thing ...

GOOD LUCK ..

Wow!! Thank you! This is exactly the information I was looking for! I have been wanting to visit some futurities just to see what it is all like. The mare I have wouldn't be ready until 2015 so next year I could get better acquainted with how it all works. Thanks so much!

My advice is - don't bite off more than you can chew. It is a very expensive game to play and you can't get right down to the end and start cutting corners. Most futurities have payment plans on their entries but however much it costs to enter is about how much your going to spend going. Once you start the plan moving towards entering there is not a lot of time or room for down time, it's just a steady pace all the way from the start of the 3-4 year old year through the 4-5 yr old year. Your going to need to develop a good relationship with your vet and take your horse in for checkup a along the way. It is better to get ahead of a possible problem then try to play catchup once it becomes an issue. Pay attention to every little detail in your training and care program. Every horse can have an off day but if it persists or if you can't get a handle on it then go to the vet or possibly another trainer you can trust to be an extra set of eyes.
Make a plan early and stick to it. Set long term and short term goals of where you want your horse to be by certain times throughout the year. Don't overthink it too much and trust your gut instinct.

Yes that is what I worried about....biting off more than I can chew and the extreme expense associated with futurities. I like how you said have a plan of how far along your horses need to be at certain times. I will keep that in mind! I have a half sister to Michele McLeod's Kellies Chick that I have some high hopes for!

Start a savings account now. Like others have said, it is very expensive! There is one in Dec. in S. Ca. In fact that one is this comming weekend. You can find the info on that one at www.cbarnquarterhorses.com There are 3 in a row in Arizona in January. You can find their info at www.brn4d.com They are the Classic Equine, Greg Olsen, and Pac West which is the third one at www.pacwest.com . When your paying a $200 a month payment and doing it for 3, thats $600 a month for just one horse. 3 Monthly payments. Plus $300 for stalls and $300 for rv hookups not to mention your fuel and food and shavings. Then in March & April there are 3 in a row again in the NW. One in Salkum Wa. in march, then Sand Cup in Pasco Wa. then Barrel Daze in Walla Walla, www.vgbra.org . So again, your paying into 3 all at once. Those you can find the info in the futurity calander at www.brn4d.com .  BRN4D is the premier barrel racing association in the NW now.
All those listed anybody can enter irrigardless of how your horse is bred. VGBRA does have a very strong stallion incentive which pays bonus money to the foals of VGBRA incentive stallions.
JUST MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT ENTER YOUR HORSE BEFORE DEC. 1 Of your horses futurity year or he will be in-eligable.

Thanks for all the info! I didn't even know there was one in SoCal and I live here. I knew about the ones in AZ. Thank God I have already planned a savings account. My horse won't be ready until 2017 so I have lots of time to learn!

So with regards to this no competing before December 1... is that completely and all rodeos/races? Can I only do time onlys? The reason I ask is that in my area there is a really really tiny rodeo up in the sticks that my family is very involved in. You do run for money but it is so backwoodsy its crazy. Its basically a play day. Is that not allowed??

You can NOT enter ANY barrel race period. It doesnt matter if your competing for a piece of penny candy. You can only do time only. BUT...you can enter anything else, roping, poles, halter, whatever, it doesnt matter you just cant enter barrels. No matter where, or for how much.
