| I have a decent little paint mare who is only 14.2. She has a lot of spunk and personality. My daughter showed her in breed shows. Pleasure games you name it. We never bred her because our trainer somewhat discouraged us because of her height.
Lately we have been considering breeding her to a barrel racing stud but we were not sure if it would be a waste because of her size
Has anybody had good luck competing on smaller horses. Horses we competed on in the past and now are at least 15 hands
Thank you |

| The size would not dissuade me, but the fact that you described her as "decent" would.

Location: Bandera, TX | My "soul mate" mare is 14.1 hands on a tall day... She is Docs Perscription/Doc O'lena bred and while extremely athletic and smart not the tallest one. I picked a race bred stallion of average size. The baby is now almost 7 years old and is significantly taller than her mother - I have never measured her so can't comment exactly. She is however still not a big/tall horse. |

| Height wouldn't be the determining factor for me. I've ridden a 14 hand mare that is wicked on the barrels and poles, and if I owned her I would definitely be getting babies out of her.
Consider your mare's conformation, temperament, bloodlines, and performance when deciding if she'll produce a nice foal. |

^^^^ DITTO! Bozo is like 14.2 or 14.3 and Hotshot was 14.2 MAYBE
But if the only thing you are looking at to improve on the mare is a little more size there are alot of nice studs that throw size and bone... I tend to pic a stud based on what I want to improve on a mare... if she needs more speed, find a WELL MADE stud that is everything I would want, PLUS run... |

PS... find a new trainer....lol unless you were hunter jumpin on a shorter horse, that trainer needs to educate him or herself that height is just that... |

| I bred my 16.2 hand mare to a 14.2 with shoes on stallion hoping for a 15 hand horse. I ended up with a 15.3 hand gelding and that was early last summer, who knows what he measures out now. This was the mare's first foal. |

Location: LaBelle, Florida | I just sold a 15.2 h 6 year old gelding. His dam was 14.1 on her tippy toes, his sire was 16.2. Both stout horses. This gelding was literally like climbing up a brick wall to mount him. Super nice horse. |

I have three horses in my pasture that are half-siblings. Two of them stand 16+ and the other might be 14.1 with her shoes on (no clue how she turned out tiny). Two of them look like race horses and the one who does not is the one with the impressive track record that is a testament to her grit and guts. |
