| I thought I was dressed pretty good to ride in temps with a windchill of 15 yesterday, but after about 3 hours, I was FROZEN (mostly my hands and toes, but cold all over)! For those of us who have to bear with the cold temps, what do you wear to keep warm so that you can keep on riding? It took me a good hour to unthaw and get warm again! |

Location: OK | I have long johns etc, but my favorite is a pair of polar king coveralls. They're insulated, have long sleeves, the legs zip and the front zips. I can take any weather in those. Wool socks on my feet and definitely a hat. Coveralls are kinda hard to ride in, but if I ride all week in them, when I go make a run somewhere, it seems easier to ride in regular clothes lol. Also, I can wear them right up until my turn and take them off since I don't have to take off boots or anything to get them off. You can find them for less than $50. I think mine were on sale for about $30. |

Location: Kansas | Long johns, and sweatpants....yes I said it! I double up on sweatpants when I ride unless I'm at a barrel race which is not often at all during winter. A longsleeve shirt, hoodie, heavy winter jacket, lots of those hand warmer things in my gloves and an ear warmer over my ears |

| I had on long johns with tights over them, under armour with a sweatshirt and jacket over that, a few pairs of socks, Sorel boots (they allow me to wear thicker socks) a beanie and some gloves that I thought were warm...I forgot I have coveralls, those are kind of tough to ride in, especially with a not-so-broke horse! I was just curious what worked for others...the highs this week are 25!! Yuck |

Location: Alberta | I have heat lock tights & socks....wool, UGG boots (not the stylish type), wild rag, beanie & chinks! But I guess we haven't defined "cold" ....we are at - 20F with the wind right now and I am NOT riding or even hauling anywhere this week!
14 F with the windchill is about my max....

| Layers, layers, layers! Tank top, t-shirt, long sleeve shirt, fleece sweatshirt, coat, and if it is really cold a vest over that. 3-4 pairs of socks under either a pair of boots one size bigger than usual, or Bog boots (as long as your stirrups are big enough your feet will come out. Thick long johns under jeans, and ski pants over that. A trapper hat is much, much warmer than a stocking hat, and a scarf over your face; or, a ski mask with a stocking hat over it. Gloves--a thin glove under more of a winter-type glove. Helps to have a couple pair in case one set gets wet. I am comfortable riding in temps down to 15-20 with this. Moving around with so many layers all day is a great workout!!

Location: In The Snow, AZ | Long johns, jeans, long sleeves anda carthart. But i still freeze when its windy. We had 55 mph wind yesterday. Blowing sideways again today. Our driveway arch thing is falling down and corral panels were crashing. I was chilled to the bone trying to get it all back up and safe. |

| Hand warmers, I put them in my boots, and the body warmers. I put the hand warmers in the bottom of my boot and then put it on. It can make it a little uncomfortable but they're warm. I put them in my gloves too, on the top of my hand. I will also ride in my snow boots when its really cold. They don't fit in the stirrups but I can get the toe of them in enough to ride. Thermals, sweatshirt, snow pants, and my boarding jacket. I sometimes look like the kid from the Christmas Story. |

Location: North Dakota | Got an electric jacket for Christmas last year, and I love it!!

I also use hand warmers and toe warmers in my gloves and boots. I usually don't ride with a saddle in the winter, so bulky warm boots aren't an issue. I either wear riding snowpants or else Underarmor with sweatpants over the top. Layers, layers, layers!
I have a helmet wrap cover to go around my helmet, and wear a neck gator underneath it.
If it is super windy and nasty outside, I don't ride. But if the sun it out and there's only a small breeze, then I do. Air temperature doesn't really matter to me. The sunshine and wind are bigger factors.

Of course we were a lot colder..................it was -10F when I left the house this morning.........wind chills were in the -20F to -30F range.
Carhartt coveralls. Heavy heavy coat over an ultralight primaloft pullover. Long sleeve shirt under that. Long johns.....cuddleduds are good, BOT makes good ones too. Silk scarf. Windproof headband to cover the ears. I don't usually wear a hat, unless it is snowing too. And pak boots.
I should also add that I just don't ride when it gets below zero...........unless I absolutely have to.....like ranch work or packing an elk out or something. When it is in that single digits, teens and twenties I like to ride bareback and let the horse keep me somewhat warmer.

Oh I SO need one of these!!! The wind snuck up on me yesterday, and I know that's what did me in. Normally I pack my hand/foot warmers around in my pockets just in case, but it was deceiving yesterday with the sun out! |

Get the ones in the Gold wrapper from Wal-mart. The clear wrapper ones don't work as good. |

| Long johns if I need them, coveralls, hat, earmuffs, warm supple gloves and in the extreme cold, a neckerchief pulled up on my face, outlaw style..
But as I am getting older I just can't take the wind. At night, doing chores, I can just put on a heavy sweatshirt at 25f and end up sweating, but freeze my butt off in the same temp if the wind is blowing. In fact I just won't ride anymore if there is much wind chill....have turned into a big weenie!
IIMHO, nothing is going to keep you "warm" with that kind of wind chill for THREE hours! Inside the barn and/or out of the wind is another matter. |
