Location: Knoxville,TN | my barn just switched to 50 - 50 safe choice and this mixed.. it looks like a sweet feed but I was assured that it wasn't. I'm not that great with nutrition and such. I've been thinking about switching to TE.

Location: Florida.. | why would they combine the 2? it kinda defeats the purpose of the safe choice to throw in sweet feed.. |

| You do not mix feeds. It completely changes the nutritional value of the feed. Some minerals need to be in a certain ratio and you have no way of telling what they are if feeds are mixed. Kind of defeats the purpose of the nutritional label. |

The Special Care is the lowest of the SafeChoices, but it still isn't as low in NSC as other brands.
Triple Crown, Blue Bonnet, Triumph, Seminole all have much better quality low starch options. ADM is also another good choice.
I love TC Senior as a low starch, high fat feed. Less than 13% NSC with 10% fat. Love the stuff. |

I'm sure they are mixing it to cut down on the cost. |

| I have tried all of them as much as i love safe choice....their ssenior does not compare to Triple crown senior but is a lot easier to feed being a sweet pellet. i tried perform but didnt see any difference from original safe choice. special needs is the lowest and it was working for the mare that i was trying it on but then they came out with a "black bag" feed that is what they referred to it as max something and that is working a ton better than safe choice, safe choice special needs it is low starch lower protien and higher fat. Personally i am leaning town the entire barn going on triple crown senior regardless of age (only excluding special needs)as that is the best by far although miserable to break up in NY winter weather! |

I can't get any of the feeds you mentioned. I have access to Purina, Nutrena, Oh wait I'm an idiot. I see Nutrena makes Triumph. There's a feed store in town that carries Nutrena so maybe I should check into that. I was feeding my gelding Purina Ultium. He's been out on pasture all summer so now just bringing the horses in for the winter. I really wanted to try Renew Gold on him but not having any luck finding it. It sucks living in BFE. I should also say I tried ADM because I think its a great feed but it gave him the runs. |

They have 5 total "Safe Choices." IMO and in talking to VETS . . .It's the biggest marketing scheme ever. |

I know some horses that look great on it; but also a lot that don't.
Plus, if you look at the labels on the "Special Care" the third of fourth ingredient is cottonseed meal, along with countless other junk ingredients. That is the biggest filler in the cattle industry. I'm sorry - but I don't see paying $17+ a bag for fillers, because that's what it is here in Central Florida.
I know most feed (minus sweet feed here) have fillers. . . but cottonseed meal? I don't see how that is special care in any way. If I didn't know to look at the ingredients on the tag the name would make me think that I was giving my horse really good ingredients. . Not cattle industry fillers. JS.
"Raw cottonseed and cottonseed meal contain a substance called gossypol that interferes with digestion. Therefore cottonseed is particularly undesirable for feeding foals. Adult horses can tolerate the gossypol if fed cottonseed in moderation. Monogastrics (e.g. horses, pigs and poultry) seem to be more affected by gossypol than other species. Research in other species has shown cottonseed meal to decrease sperm production in males and slow growth in young if fed in high levels."

I wont feed it..barns mix junk with junk and end up with horses feeling like junk IMHO..Then they increase grain to try to make up for it and it ends up costing more.. if they have a $$ issue go simple.. oats and beet pulp and added fat supplment and GOOD hay.. im a triple crown addict.

| yes I agree I've done a lot of research and found plain old whole oats and a vitamin supplement is the way to go I also add soy been oil and haven't seen the colic monster once. look up feed your horse whole oats and why it's a good idea there is a lot of data out there about oats and soy been oil and how the oil is good for joints and stopping colic. if you have questions just email me I'll send you some links.

| I hate feeding horses. It should be easy but it's not. There is to much marketing in feed and not enough product. I'm feeding the plain safe choice at the moment. I don't think it's the best feed there is. I don't mind it but I am trying TE I don't like the price of it either. I have one that has colicked on me twice now. But I don;t think the feed was the issue. I would like to feed cheaper!!!but better. The way the bags are designed now I think more money goes into them than the product. I heard the oats were hard on ulcers? I dunno what to do anymore. The more I read the more my head swims. I don't grain one of mine because he's obese. Probably has something wrong with him knowing my luck(he does look pretty healthy though) The one I do grain needs more than hay it seems. We feed a really good hay of Alf/orchard grass. He eats a lot and fills in before his girth but his topline isn't where I would like it.
