It would be all fun and games until my $4,500 horse beat your $175,000 horse. But hey my friend, I will buy you a beer and pizza with my $50 winnings

People may not think barrel horses are "worth" that kind of money, but they do bring that kind of money. |

Then why is that number not unheard of for a top performer? Maybe they aren't worth it to you. |

Can I get in on some of that beer and pizza?? LOL
I still wouldn't pay that much for a horse, even if it ran at the NFR.....I could buy a nice house sitting on some land for that, or 10 quality bred horses, along with a nice truck/trailer!!! |

Location: Bandera, TX | I know of horses that have sold in that range.... They consistantly won at big rodeos on different ground conditions, are good on the trailer to criss-cross the country, and are of fairly sound mind and body. |

Bottom line is they're worth whatever someone will pay, and while most of us never could give that kind of money for a horse, there are just as many people out there that can and will give that kind of money. At the end of the day this is a business....for the sellers at least. Buying a horse like that isn't expected to necessarily MAKE a profit for the buyer, especially when you consider the feed, hay, vet bills, travel expenses, etc that go into being on the "hot and dusty". The expectations are that the horse will get that person to the top of where they want to compete, whether that be the NFR or the Mega, or the American. There are few horses that have sold for those large sums that have in turn gone to make a profit for their new owners after all the expenses are deducted, but that doesn't matter. They bought the horse to enjoy and to be competitive with the best in the world, not because they expected to actually turn a profit. I say if you've got that kind of extra money, go for it, and have a great time doing it. Won't ever be a reality for me, but I prefer the nuts and bolts of the training anyway....a road warrior i'm not! |

Location: Deep South | A horse around here sold for $150k a couple of years ago, he consistently won PCA rodeos, including the year end saddle at the PCA Finals (more than once). And also won at some supershows like the Holiday Classic in Jackson, go-rounds AND average. Just a solid, extremely proven 1D/rodeo horse in the southeast. He had regular maintenace like running on Lasix etc, but was not unsound, was under 10 years old. No hot names on his papers. Owner told me she sold him then because 1) the guy that bought him was very persistent and 2) the horse was a gelding and her hubby told her if he broke his leg tomorrow he'd be worthless.
Same lady had a mare that ran right with the gelding, almost identical record, bred nearly the same, that $150k wouldn't touch. |
