Location: Never in one place long | So with the passing of Nelson Mandela and the posts about how he had a really bad side to him, I've been thinking... is there ANY famous people out there who are NOT corrupt under it all!? people like JFK, Margaret Sanger, Henry Ford, Clinton, George Bush, Thomas Jefferson Columbus, Cecil Rhodes etc...that we teach our CHILDREN are "good" honorable people all have their dirty little secrets...I guess no one is perfect but some of the sins they've commited are pretty bad especially when they've been chosen to represent our country etc and many people have no IDEA! These people have a commitment to DO the right thing! The more I read and research you find the dirty things that people have done to get into power or that they've done while in power.... people who many adore... Just makes me sad that people who have great potential to be a strong role model always let you down when they have a responsibility to be a good one. :( It's sad because so many people adore these people and we teach our children look up to them. I don't think it's right to teach children about how great of people they are without mentioning their imperfections as well.... people like Columbus should NOT be celebrated, it is wrong on so many levels! Sorry for the rant.... interested in discussion on this as I have a lot more to learn!

Good advice lol, well I KNOW that these people all changed the world in some positive way but is it not possible to be a GOOD person while doing so? Just bugs me! Ignorance sure is bliss that is for sure but it is not acceptable in my opinion because you cannot make good decisions if you are uninformed.

My kids are only in 3rd and 4th grade and they've heard the truth (both sides of the coin) since they were in 2nd grade from right here at home. And when they are given someone to study, we use books that tell the entire story. I don't go into it with the idea I'm outting people in a negative way or proving the one-sidedness of the school systems, I rather talk to my kids about learning how to discern information presented to them and hope they go into the world as adults knowing there is always more to the story and form better opinions knowing that. |

Don't let the schools and the media do all the educating. My kids are only in 3rd and 4th grade and they've heard the truth (both sides of the coin) since they were in 2nd grade from right here at home. And when they are given someone to study, we use books that tell the entire story. I don't go into it with the idea I'm outting people in a negative way or proving the one-sidedness of the school systems, I rather talk to my kids about learning how to discern information presented to them and hope they go into the world as adults knowing there is always more to the story and form better opinions knowing that.
That is great advice and VERY awesome that you do that! I would definetely do that someday if I ever have kids... I understand that while teaching younger kids about "famous" people it would be traumatic to teach them about the real things Columbus did but it bugs me that they make the story out like he's a hero... not sure what the solution to that is. Since I grew up thinking that when I went to college and found out the truth to a lot of these things I felt lied to by my teachers whom I trusted and that isn't good for children either....

Yeah, exactly. Same experience here. There are so many things in the media and taught in school that just scare me to raise some kind of minion who "goes along" with the information we're fed. My kids will be the bane of some progressive college professor someday.  |

Now on a more close to home personal thought along those lines............Do you all give all sides & facts of what you have done in your past or present for that matter to your children? All....... the details? They know all the bad, wild, whatever you have done in your life...... Just curious.

I agree, when the time is right I would think you should tell your kids, it's important they know parents are not perfect as well and sometimes by telling them mistakes you've made they can learn from it but there are some things that children just don't need to know their parents did or wouldn't want to I would think! |

I still am perfect, but that does not mean that my chirrens, even the grown one, needs to know everything about me.
