Am I really the Weirdo?

I've hit a lot of barrels lately, and therefore my left knee is a battered, bruised mess. That said, it didn't hurt to walk until last night on the way home from Tulsa. We barely (I do mean barely.....we were darn near stopped when we  bumped it) got the third barrel yesterday afternoon and I don't even think my knee touched it, but OMG it hurt running out. I actually stayed on Cliff until we got back to the warmup pen & his halter because I wasn't sure I could walk if I got off. I was able to unsaddle him, cool him out, load all my stuff, etc., but I think it stiffened up on the drive home and now I'm walking like a 110 year old with one leg shorter than the other. (I know that's a great mental image for you all LOL)

Now the pain is concentrated on the outside of the knee and its worst when I try to walk up or down stairs or bend it anywhere near a full range of motion. If I can keep the knee straight or almost straight, it doesn't hurt too bad but when I try to bend it to tackle stairs I about see stars. Luckily my job involves sitting down most of the time but I have a feeling climbing on that big monster Wednesday evening is going to be interesting. lol.

Any ideas what I could have hurt and what I can do to regain some  mobility? I've got a PHT magnet wrap on it under my jeans and I can feel some extra warmth under the magnets but wow I am sore. There's no swelling, no heat, not even a new bruise just serious pain. I can try to make a dr. appointment this week but not until Wednesday afternoon at least.

Could be anything.... if you could, I'd see a good orthopedic dr. I'm not sure if your GP will be able to see a whole lot.

you might have a torn meniscus. my mom just had her's scoped and was walking on it the same day (cautiously but still).  She had the same things you are describing, pain mostly on stairs, up and down and limited range of motion.

And can they do anything for that or should I just wrap it and gimp on?

surgery. that's what my mom had, though it was a scope (as in 3 or 4 holes around the knee to clean up the internal tear). would not have healed on it's own, but like I said she was walking the same day.  Some tears are worse than others, and involve more invasive surgery, but the symptoms you are describing are identical to my moms.
should add that she had an MRI to confirm diagnosis. I am not sure if they are visible via x-ray or not.

Well crap. Maybe I should go with Matt to his specialist appointment Thursday. lol. He's getting his riding hand looked at and probably going to be told that he broke something in it back in June and shouldn't have been riding with it the rest of the summer & fall.

knee scope and they will shave it and trim up the torn edge if that is what is it.  Ice for initial injury, then heat.

You have a torn meniscus..I had this too. Knee surgery, should be fine that day to walk on unless the stitch it back together, sometimes they will do that. I am out till march for hip surgery I just had a month ago. Good luck!

Yep, I'd see an orthopedist. And ice until then. When you ride (pre and post surgery) lengthening your stirrups a lot will help. I'm two years post op, and it's all better. Now I need to do the other knee.

Well the good news is that I left that PHT wrap on there from about noon until 9:30 and while covering basketball games (standing up, walking around some and taking pictures) it seemed to loosen up and honestly I feel about 75% now instead of 25-30% like I was at noon. Not sure exactly what I did, but the magnets seem to have helped it. WHEW!!!! I am keeping the PHT wrap inside and may just sleep in it tonight so I don't have to gimp around all morning like I did today.

Honestly I haven't taken any ibuprofen or anything along those lines. I wore the magnet wrap from noon until 9:30 yesterday and then put it back on when I went to bed at midnight, took it off around 7:15 this morning when it was velcroed to my sheets and I feel so much better! It is amazing. I brought the magnets to work but haven't put the wrap on and still I was actually able to navigate the stairs up and down into the county commission meeting today without a lot of pain. It's not 100% but way better than yesterday. Now I wish I could figure out what I did during the run to tweak it so I can try to avoid it in the future!

you need to see an orthopedic doctor. I hit a gate post trying to get into a pen and then hit the first barrel (same knee) at a rodeo in February one year. I hurt and was sore but kept on. One day a couple of months later, my knee was swollen. Turned out I had fractured my knee cap but they didn't discover that until they got into scope it. I wish I'd been more vigilant when it first happened, but I refused to let the EMTs cut my jeans and refused to go to the hospital. Still paying for it some 12 years or so later.
