Has anyone had any luck using saddle shims for a horse that hollows out behind the withers? if yes, what brand did you use?

I used the Martin/Classic Equine neoprene shims. I used it on my gelding that had some atrophy. I used them for a few months and did a lot of long trotting. He filled out really good. You don't have to use any particular shim though - I realized after I bought mine I could have folded up a kitchen towel or used sheepskin.

If the bars fit the rest of the back well, I've had luck filling in the hollow with a biofit pad on one horse.

I really wanted to try one of those pads too but the shim was cheaper. Now he's filled out so I can use my 5 Stars.

I went to wal mart and got thick foam. The great thing is when they lose their ability to bounce back I can throw them away and cut another piece. And it is cheap!

I like the Pat Parelli shim shape for filling in hollows behind shoulders.
