My mare's right hind leg has been swollen for three days now. She had been stalled for two days because of -40 weather and I assumed it was just stalking up though I had never had that issue with her before. I walked her for 15min at a time until it was nice enough to turn her out again and it is still not going down. It's not throwing a lot of heat and there are no cuts or points where she reacts to pressure. There isn't a hair out of place. Is it possibly a bacteria or virus? I'm clueless. Ive increased her turn out, decreased her feed and she gets only grass hay 5x day.

Could be cellulitis...if it is antibiotics are needed.

being that it is so cold where you are any heat may be significant. I would think cellulitis is a possibility. Or that she kicked her stall and now has a swollen leg. If you put a pressure wrap on it what happens? Does she walk and trot normally or is she short striding on it?

I would suggest getting xrays, as it could be a fractured splint or cannon bone. I have had both happen and both horses were not lame,

Funny story- one of our horses kicked the stall at a weekend race, it swelled up and we went and had rads taken… come to find out she had her splint bone removed in the past!! Vet was like.. well, she didn't break the splint bone because it's already gone!

I doubt anything is broken, she walks, trots, and lopes fine, no limp. When She's out during the day and moving the swelling goes down to almost normal but overnight in her stall it get worse. She did kick a hole in the stall boards a few days ago, but its very light material(like a puckboard surface but giproc inside) so I didn't think that would have been the cause(she does it pretty often). I will haul her to the vet tomorrow morning, just thought I'd see if anyone had sent this before. Will also look ip cellulitis. Thanks!

Ours didn't break anything either, just bruised the snot out of her leg. Took a while to get the swelling out.

Hoary Alyssum - due to the drought, we have a lot in our hay. Horses react differently. Mine has had swelling in 2-3 legs and no lameness unless it gets super swollen. Some swell in all 4 some only in one. Check your hay
