Location: Phoenix | I was able to take Hubby's new horse around the barrels, and he seems to know what he's doing! We knocked over a couple....I'm still figuring out his style and how to ride him. He goes in really round, but then wants to rollback on the backside....kind of tricky! But he's nice; he actually LISTENS to what I'm saying, so the barrels are rider error.
Keep in mind... a) I haven't ridden around a set of barrels in like....4 years. b) We are BOTH out of shape. c) I'm not sure the last time he was taken around the pattern. d) I FELT like I was really hustling and we were going fast, but apparently I've turned into an old lady. Haha!!

How cool -- looks like you could be back in business before too long. That would be fun to find out knowing you didn't buy the horse for that! |

I think I read when you posted he was a little older? Might want to get his hocks checked and maybe injected, he wrings his tail a little but otherwise looks really good!! |

I agree with less pocket and push him farther up in the turn. I really like him. It looks like you can have so much fun with him! Don't get frustrated and keep trying I think you really have something there. What did your husband buy him for....roping? |

Location: Oklahoma | Very nice horse! I agree with having his hocks checked...that will sometimes keep them from moving through the turn...also, with a little more momentum, he probably would have gotten by. I also agree with the no pocket. Those kind can go in and come out with very little room and make it look easy. Gotta love a flax maned horse! They're my favorite! ;)

Location: MD | I agree with the others. Get his hocks checked. Dragging over barrels in the manner that you are is caused by two things 1) Lack of gas pedal. You know you're both out of shape and just getting to know each other, so don't stress on it. Just focus on hustling through the turn. 2) You can't "lift" a horse like this by the backside. The higher your hand gets, the more their nose and shoulder come in. Ride two handed in, set your hand on his neck, hustle with your seat and leg and enjoy the ride! As soon as you learn how to ride one that shapes and then rolls back, they're way fun! |
