Location: Georgia | This is the first mare I've ever bred successfully so, naturally, I'm full of a variety of questions. She is right at 8 months and is holding her weight well. She is and always has been a very easy keeper so that hasn't been a huge concern. I have her on free choice coastal bermuda and she is currently getting two scoops a day of this feed. Based on the analysis, is this a sufficient feed for her to maintain the rest of her pregnancy and through nursing the foal? Obviously I will have to increase the amount she recieves, but is there anything else you guys recommend to improve the health of the mare and growth of the foal? Minerals, supplements, etc? Just looking for some general advice to help me out from this point on. Thank you guys! | Crude Protein | (min.) | 14.00% | | Lysine | (min.) | 0.65% | | Methionine & Cystine | (min.) | 0.35% | | Threonine | (min.) | 0.45% | | Crude Fat | (min.) | 6.00% | | Crude Fiber | (max.) | 12.00% | | Calcium (Ca) (min.) 0.60% | (max.) | 1.10% | | Phosphorus (P) | (min.) | 0.60% | | Magnesium (Mg) | (min.) | 0.40% | | Potassium (K) | (min.) | 0.90% | | Copper (Cu) | (min.) | 50 ppm | | Selenium (Se) | (min.) | 0.60 ppm | | Zinc (Zn) | (min.) | 150 ppm | | Manganese | (min.) | 120 ppm | | Vitamin A | (min.) | 6,000 IU/lb. | | Vitamin D3 | (min.) | 400 IU/lb. | | Vitamin E | (min.) | 100 IU/lb. | | Biotin | (min.) | 0.30 mg/lb. | And I have to add a recent picture of the fat girl!

| Higher protein, Higher fat
more lysine, more trace minerals,
Just more "stuff" that preggos need to do their job

Location: TX | Alfalfa!!! Best thing a preggo mare can have.. We just free choice feed it & our feed is very similar to yours. They get two scoops twice a day and we supplement with a calf manna supplement when they are about a month out from foaling & while they're nursing. |

Thank you! I had considered alfalfa but its very hard to come by around here. Do you think she would benefit from alfalfa pellets? I can get those from our feed store. And as far as the supplement, is it just the regular calf manna? |

Yes the alfalfa pellets would still benefit her! The supplement we feed is a 28% protein. It's called multi max which I'm pretty sure is super comparable to calf manna |

| My recip mare is really big so she get 1 lb of LMF super Supplement a formula and 1.5 lbs of LMF Developement. Your mare looks to be in good condition the most important thing is make sure she is getting enough protein and all the vit/min they need. If you are feeding a fortified feed I try to find one that has alfalfa formula or grass formula if I am feeding strait alfalfa or straight grass (this should insure proper cal:phos ratio) If you are only feeding grass hay you prob need to up the protein. The other thing to be careful of is if you are feeding a fortified grain make sure you are feeding atleast the min suggest lbs per day. If a feed suggest feeding at least 3 lbs and you are only feeding 1 lb then your horse getting 1/3 of the suggested daily values. I believe the Triple Crown 30% suggests 1lb per day, it is a great feed for easy keeper broodmares.

Location: Bandera, TX | I agree with the above post. I would either buy some lysine and add it to your diet or change her to a higher lysine and Ca+ and Phosp. diet now. I too, love lots of alfalfa in my mares-they nurse much better. They need to make 3-4 gal. of milk daily! |

If you do feed it, make sure you're measuring per POUND, not scoop. We use a plastic coffee mug & it holds 1/2 pound of the TC 30%. (It's a Buckeye Nutrition mug made to measure out their Gro N Win which is the same concept)
It's a good feed. I have a mare that is fed 2lbs of the 30% a day & is on free choice coastal & that's it & she's happy as can be. It has a lot of things that other feeds just don't offer.
1lb should do for your needs. It's highly concentrated, so only need to feed small amounts.

Location: Oklahoma & Texas | Looks like a good/decent feed you are feeding...I would make sure u know how much your scoops weigh so you know if you are meeting the requirements on the label...I feed my broodies nutrena safechoice mare n foal...its similar but also higher in protein..lysine..vit e..and a few others it also has probiotics in it..you can see the label online...however...honestly you really dont have to up their nutrients til the last trimester which at 8 months your mare is now in..you'd be fine supplementing that feed for additional protein and nutrients like lysine. Ca, phosphorus vit e.. alfalfa is a staple for me too..While I don't feed it free choice like some because I have a couple mares that would turn into elephants lol..I do feed free choice coastal and then mine get generous amts of alfalfa...1 to 2 big flakes a.m and p.m.. when they foal out you can almost double their grain and alfalfa because of how much it takes to feed their babies..alfalfa will really help with milk production too..if u dont have access to alfalfa hay the pellets ae good too..but I'm sure you can make due with additional grain and free choice hay as well you just might notice your mare dropping a lot of weight the closer you get to weaning though because those babies will suck it off their bones.... |
