I have a horse industry friend who has a mare that I really like, they are breeding her this coming spring, but I would like to talk to them about leasing her(but not removing her from their care) and having her bred to Dinero(Yes, I know his stud fee and related veterinary costs).

Before I pitch the idea to the mare owner, what kind of contracts(if you have done something like this before) would you use. What is a fair price to pay to lease the mare for the year? Risks involved(not including health or loss of foal-I'm aware it could be a money pit).

Thanks!

I don't know about the contract end but maybe look up walz performance horses and see there ET costs, they lay out prices for their proven mares (very nice stock) and may give you an idea of a fair price. Hope this helps!

They actually have really reasonable fees. I thought it would be higher than that!

I love to hear about your future foals... Living vicariously through you!
Sonya walz also has a new mare they may pull embryos from, a nice nice mare! Her registered name is insane for brookstone, very nice!

I have seen some pretty simple situations that both parties agree to pretty easily ..
this is a common one used with race horse owners .......>>>>

1.) AQHA MARE LEASE 2 YEARS (2-3 MONTHS PRE CS + 11 MONTHS + 6 MONTHS FOAL)
2.) YOU PAY ALL EXPENSES // FEES AT DINERO STUD BARN
3.) OPEN ACCT AT LOCAL VET AND SHOER TO CHARGE ALL BILLS TO YOU
4.) 2 YEAR FULL CARE FOR MARE $300/MONTH IF YOU FALL BEHIND OR NO PAY FOR ANY REASON ... MARE LEASE IS AUTOMATICALLY ENDED AND BREEDING CERTIFICATE ON FOAL IS SENT TO MARE OWNER AS THE OWNER OF THE DINERO FOAL AT NO COST TO THEM ... (stallion owner honors the broken lease and BC goes to the current owner of the mare)
5.) YOU FIND OUT 2014 STUD THEY WERE GOING TO BREED TO AND PRE-PAY
A 2015 BREEDING TO THAT STALLION ...
6.) YOU MAY HAVE TO ADD A COUPLE THOUSAND AS INCENTATIVE TO GET THEM TO AGREE SINCE THEY HAVE TO WAIT A YEAR TO HAVE A BABY ...

This is about as simple as it gets for it to be fair to all parties and there is still a possibility of losing a friend during the ~2 yr time frame ... put everything in writing ...

**************************************************************
Two situations I am doing ... sold two mares to Canadians .. papers are already transferred .. .. one in Calgary and one in Wnnipeg ...

CALGARY BUYER: OPEN MARE they want bred to a certain stallion ... stallion fees are paid and they left an open credit card for mare care with stallion farm ....

WINNIPEG BUYER: Mare is in foal ... after foaling at stud farm ...... they want to breed to a certain stallion and checked in foal 90 days after insemination before shipping ... they too have paid stallion fee and left CC for future 90 day mare care ...

My full care charges are $250/month and free delivery to the studs of their choice March 1, 2014 .. ... the breeding farm will handle the Canadian Health papers and the shipper per the mare owners requests after being bred etc etc ..
This is about as simple as it gets ... lol
