I was diagnosed with SI dysfunction and am currently in Physical Therapy to strengthen the muscles that need to be strengthened in order for my pelvis to become more stabilized.  Does anyone else have this issue, and if so, were you able to tolerate riding/barrel racing?

I am sure someone on here has some experience, but with it being New Year's Eve many are probably not online.

i just had my 8th (yeah, eight) back surgery Dec. 4th.  i do know that exercise will sure help our backs, done properly!  i went thru an intense spinal rehab a few years ago and continue to do the 1 1/2 hr. of exercise that they taught me.  i also walk 3 - 4 miles a day, now with a cane.  i know i would be in a lot worse shape if i didn't do my exercise and walking.  So, i hope you will continue to do whatever they recommend to you!  And, Good Luck!

Spill your beans, where you told to quit riding and never took MD advice?

SI joint dysfunction can be a bit of a blanket term, with common scenarios being, sprains, hyper mobility, early onset osteoarthritis changes, all with varying degrees of severity. The degree of severity and reason for pathology are usually key factors in how well you will do. Was the onset a sudden traumatic cause or slow onset over the years? Is the joint space completely arthritic, or just mildly affected, do you have lumbar spine issues as well? What is your genetic history like? (Family members similar problems?) most people respond well to therapy, especially well enough to ride. If hypermobility is the key issue (from an old sprain, or pregnancy) an si jt belt can sometimes be worn to ride in, and exercises are something you do rain or shine, symptomatic or not. Hope this helps!

Would you please give us some general exercise suggestions.

Nope, was never told to quit!!  i asked that the first night after surgery (first surgery), my Ortho Surgeon told me that i had to just "use your brain" about who i ride.......not to try "proving" something to anybody.  Told him i was WAY too old for that!  Each doctor has told me basically the same thing.  i know i can't compete anymore, but i still hope (and dream) to be able to bring Clue out here to me!  My neurosurgeon said that riding is therapeutic (sp?) as long as i don't get "jarred"!
My back injury came started when i was 10 yrs old and fell thru a hay chute in barn while playing basketball.  As i went thru the floor...rather quickly......my boot got stuck in a beam and really stretched me out......then i hit the cement.  So did a double whammy.  i have arthritis, spinal stenosis and along with degenative disc disease.  i know the risks i take every time we have to do a surgery....but i trust my doctors and i know my options.  Just falling apart as the years go by!!

Well, I'm going to use this body God gave me completely up. Yep not a single part will be working in conjunction with the next cell when I get thru using it for service. I've been told by some docs to reconsider what I'm doing to my body. Still love breaking colts but dang its catching up quick in my ouchy bones and muscles. If falling apart is a part of it I guess I need to find some docs to put humpty here back together again and again and again...

I haven't ridden yet, but I have been going to the Physical Therapist, and we tried some new exercises . . . and the pain and pressure has decreased significantly.  I think after a few more weeks I'll be good to go!  Whoop whoop!  Gonna hold off on riding until I can get back the strength in the muscles I need.  Thanks everyone for your replies!
