What is the typical height for a custom freeze brand to be placed on the hip? How big are the typical shoulder brands? My design brand involves a horseshoe with letters inside of it. I just don't know how big to order. I will be branding horses older than 2.

I believe it depends on the state. Mine is 4" tall per state requirements

From my research I believe Arkansas does not have a height requirement. Before ordering I am going to call the livestock commission to double check. If I was to order the 4 in what is the other measurement if my choices are 4x 3/8. Or 4x 9/16

I do the shoulders and mine are 4" to give you an idea - most of my friends who brand do a 4" even on the hips - the sorrels brand is high due to another brand already on the shoulder

This is who did mine and he was great to work with

Bump--I just got our brand registered and I was wondering how big to get it as well. We are doing the left hip and it will be for both cows and horses so I had no idea how big to make it. Thanks for adding pics to give me an idea of the height! I was thinking 5" but not sure. . .that may be too big. Do you know how big the G brand is on the sorrel horse's hip? I like that size too.

I think if you are doing multiple letters you should have the letters at least an inch apart from each other or the brand "runs" together.

My brand is a 3 part brand rafter HP left shoulder each letter is 2 inches high but my entire brand is 4 inches

Thanks for the replies. So typical is 4" on the hip also? Same for a picture brand? Im not sure what the difference is between the 4 x 3/8 and the 4 x 9/16

What companies did y'all use to create your custom brand?

Thanks so much for the Flying 45 info!! I ordered my brand from them Tuesday and Laura was super nice and great to work with, and their work looks amazing. I'm really excited to see what they come up with for us. And thanks to the people who posted pics--I'm going with the 4.5" based on the pics posted above. This thread got me motivated to finally get something ordered.

Don't forget that the age of the horse makes a difference (say weanlings vs 2 year olds). Brands will grow with the horse. Most people I know have one size for babies and a larger size for adults. I have a weanling that was branded with a huge brand her shoulder that irritates me because it's going to be hideously huge when she grows up. Heck, even my farrier gives me a hard time about when he comes out lol.

Not trying to steal the thread here, but when is the best time to brand?
Weanling, yearling or wait till they get grown?

Pittsburg Foundry is the one who made our brand and they are very friendly and know thier stuff...they helped me with the size and answered every question that I had...I went back and forth on the size 3-4 times before i finally decided. They would send me a proof that was to scale and i printed it off and held it on our horses to see if it looked correct.
