Location: Bastrop, Texas | Has anyone else been following this guy? He's a doozie. His last name is DeBlazio. He says they are inhumane and no longer needed in today's "modern" society. Of all the things he has to deal with, this gem of a guy wants to kick off his regime with a ban on horse drawn carriages. Scotty, beam me up! |

Location: Florida.. | wow he should be worried about other things.. St Augustine has them.. 10 yrs ago they were inhumane.. very unregulated...It was horrible to see them working thin horses for 6 hours a day in 100 degree heat.. Finally a bill was passed.. Horses are vet checked, water has to be provided, can work one horse in 45 minutes intervals but for only a few hours a day.. and only time can be from 6 -10pm or something like that . summer months closed.. They are really strict now.. but needed to be.. BUT without them it wouldnt be the same.. |

| I think we should build a fence around the entire city.....you can go in but NEVER leave. Wonder how long it would take before before they turned on thier own. Yeah I know but you can dream can't you!!!

| Β I was reading about this. I read something just yesterday that said the horses many times work 9 hours straight, then spend the rest of the time in a stall too small to lay down, and it listed a high number of accidents involving the horse drawn carriages. I gathered the accidents were due to the tours being in such high traffic areas. Can't remember where I read this. It was online so that doesn't mean it is all accurate. I do think the accidents and stalling are fact.

Location: Bastrop, Texas | You have to be able to see through these loons. It's not about humane treatment of the horses. If it was, he would change the way they are used and treated, not just ban them altogether! He was caving to pressure from PETA and HSUS. The article I read said there was 3 traffic-horse fatalities in NYC in the past 10 or so years, maybe longer. Think about it. If this sort of thing became popular, what's next? I'm surprised that anyone from here would see his point of view. Personally, I couldn't care less if they have horse drawn carriages in New York. I don't go to New York to ride in a wagon behind a horse. |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | I have another suggestion, Bibs. Why not change the way they are treated? Why not do what you said they did in St Augustine? OK, so they are worked too long, inadequately watered, etc.... I am saying fix the problem.....don't just throw them out alltogether. What's wrong with that? You bet your ass he is caving to pressure from animal rights activists. You give enough loons like this the power and what's next? Rodeo? Sounds far fetched to some.....not to me. |

Β I read there were 4 public horse deaths....on the job in the last 7 years with several accidents in just the last 2 years one where a horse bolted and ran into a car while getting trapped under the carriage.....and deaths at their stables. I know Bloomberg was for the carriages. |

So did the ones in Atlanta when I was there a few years ago. They brought a certain charm to the city, it was nice to see them and how people enjoyed the ride. I am all for regulations to make sure the horses are well cared for, but I don't think they should ban them.

Now when we use to go to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico...I wanted to buy all the carriage horses and bring them home. Pitiful. |

This does not surprise me. I was at the vet clinic the other day and a group of Mexicans brought in some young horses they had been racing. I bet they were match racing. The horses looked like crap. |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | When I was in Italy I rode in a few carriages in Rome, and I felt bad for them, I have to admit. Their feet looked like hell. It's just like anything else. They need to be cared for humanely. What frosts me is this guy just came out with this as if to suggest it was a top agenda item. Like I said, just keep an eye out for this guy. I smell a real fruitcake. |
