| So this weekend in my area they are calling for -15 degrees and 20 mph winds! I can fit most of my horses in the barn (which has open run outs) but two would be left outside for the tiny run in that they will share if they feel like being nice. I haven't blanketed yet this year and really dont want to especially since we are going on vacation next week and dont want to have the baby sitter worry about blankets.
So what do you all do when it gets this cold?!?! |

Location: Jersey Girl | Well it almost NEVER gets that cold here (Thank God!) but if it did I guess I would do what needs to be done and the rest of the time I would be in the house lol
Edited to add: as for my horses, I haven't blanketed this year (first time in 4 or 5 years) but they have a nice, big dry run-in to use as they need to. We had some snow last night and today's high is only 19 with a -4 windchill. Monday it will be in the 40's.....

Location: Southeastern Idaho | I would think as long as your horses have a place to get out of the wind and have access to plenty of feed and water they should be fine. We are looking at temps nearly this cold at the end of the week as well. Yuck. |

Location: Riding Crackhead. | Our high on Monday is predicting -15 actual air temp with high winds. The lows will be -30's. I'll have mine in the barn. Everyone has their own feelings and opinions on this. I choose to baby mine. The wind is the killer. I hate the wind. I only have 9 horses so I have stalls for everyone. |

^^^This.
Although I may opt to throw on a heavyweight blanket if the high was only -15 |

Location: Kentucky | It's going to be -5 here on Monday and Tuesday... coldest weather we've had in 20 years. Mine have a run in shelter to get out of the wind, fresh water with a heater in it, and a fresh new round bale. I don't blanket either. They are probably giving me death glares since the barn isn't done yet, but they are equipped to handle the weather. |

Location: South Dakota | I think as long as they have wind protection and plenty of hay they will be fine. Our horses are divided in to four groups and each group has their own barn or shed. Honestly most of the time you look out and they are standing by the bale feeder. |

Are you hanging out in that new indoor arena during the cold? |

| As long as they have somewhere to get out of the wind they should be OK. Lots of hay and water too. Horses are very well equiped to fight off cold weather with their fur. |

Location: Southwest Minnesota | My horses just have a 3-sided shed to get out of the wind. I don't have barn space to put them inside. When it gets this cold I give them extra hay but a lot of times they are still out in the pasture eating even when it's this cold. My pasture has a big ravine in it so a lot of times that is where they head. They are fat and fuzzy and do just fine in the cold temps. |

Not yet, lol! Between Christmas and the husband thinking we need to get all our windbreak up for the cows before we get to play in the barn. I'm looking forward to it though! |

Location: You never know where I will show up...... | All of mine have wind protection and will be getting extra hay. The only ones I have been putting in, during the extremely cold temps, are my 30 year old retiree and a broodmare that is struggling with keeping her weight in the cold. Everything else is outdoors, furry and happy. I do have a blanket on our FF stud since he doesn't grow much hair. |

Up here in my neck of the woods with the wind chill factor the weather stations were saying it will feel like 40 below....
YUCK!
Mine will have tons of hay in front of them.....I will only keep my one horse blanketed, because I have kept him blanketed since I ride him so much still in the winter so he is easier to cool out.
I may give a few doses of electrolytes too-and carefully monitor the amount of water they are drinking. (I don't have heated water buckets, nor do I have insulated ones) |

Location: Got Lobsta? | It was -15 with a -28 windchill this morning. I worry more about wind than anything. They go out while I clean stalls with their blankets on and come in for the rest of the day. They were out all day yesterday and it never got above -6 here but there was no wind and they were fine. As long as there is shelter, and loads of hay it doesn't seem to bother them. I think its going to be a LONG winter. |
